Penn Cole’s Kindred’s Curse Saga follows Diem Bellator through a world of dangerous magic, royal power and divided loyalties. If you are wondering where to start, the reading order is straightforward: Spark of the Everflame, Glow of the Everflame, Heat of the Everflame and Burn of the Everflame.

The four-book series is now complete. Burn of the Everflame, the fourth and final novel, was published on September 8, 2026. You can begin Diem’s story knowing that its conclusion is available.

This guide covers the books in order, spoiler-light introductions, bonus material and the different publication dates you may encounter while shopping.

Kindred’s Curse Saga Books in Order at a Glance

Read the novels in their numbered order. Penn Cole’s official bibliography identifies Spark as the beginning of the journey and Burn as its conclusion.

Reading orderBookOriginal publication date
1Spark of the EverflameJune 1, 2023
2Glow of the EverflameJuly 18, 2023
3Heat of the EverflameSeptember 12, 2023
4Burn of the EverflameSeptember 8, 2026

The dates above reflect the original releases, rather than every subsequent hardcover or paperback edition. Cole’s official press kit distinguishes the first three novels’ independent releases from their later Atria editions.

For a first read, follow the sequence above. There is no reason to alternate between books or begin with a later installment.

1. Spark of the Everflame

Start here. Spark of the Everflame introduces Diem Bellator, a mortal healer whose mother’s disappearance pulls her into a dangerous search for answers.

Her world is shaped by the Descended, the powerful offspring of the gods who rule over mortals. As Diem moves beyond her village, she becomes entangled with royalty, resistance and secrets that connect her family to a much larger conflict.

Cole’s introduction to Spark of the Everflame presents the series as epic fantasy romance with an enemies-to-lovers relationship, a slow romantic build and substantial attention to plot and character.

That is a useful expectation to take into the first book. Readers looking for romance alongside questions of power, identity and injustice can use Spark to decide whether they want to continue. Starting here also lets the story reveal its world gradually, rather than asking you to learn its history from a recap.

2. Glow of the Everflame

Glow of the Everflame continues Diem’s story as her involvement with the Descended becomes more complicated.

The second novel draws her deeper into the orbit of House Corbois. Survival requires an uneasy arrangement with people she has reason to distrust, while her mother’s disappearance remains unresolved.

According to Cole’s description of Glow of the Everflame, Diem faces a thirty-day challenge, shifting loyalties and demands from the Guardians. Her assumptions about enemies and allies come under pressure as the threat of war grows.

Read this immediately after Spark. The appeal of a continuing fantasy series is watching new information change your understanding of earlier events. Skipping the opening book would mean losing the context behind Diem’s fears, attachments and decisions.

3. Heat of the Everflame

Heat of the Everflame takes the series into open conflict. Diem faces competing demands from the Descended and the Guardians while trying to protect people whose interests do not neatly align.

The scope expands as Diem and Luther travel across the realms and investigate questions about her heritage. Cole’s overview of Heat of the Everflame places those discoveries alongside the challenge of finding allies and building an army.

This is the third stop in the reading order, and its premise already reveals developments from the earlier books. If you have not finished Glow, avoid detailed summaries, character histories and online discussions of Heat.

For returning readers, a short set of notes about major factions and unresolved questions can be helpful before moving to the finale. Keep those notes until you finish the series, especially if you plan to take a break between installments.

4. Burn of the Everflame

Burn of the Everflame completes the Kindred’s Curse Saga.

The final novel brings the struggle over Emarion to its concluding installment, with war spreading and rival powers facing threats on multiple fronts. The publisher’s listing for Burn of the Everflame confirms its September 8, 2026 publication date and identifies it as the final book. The US Atria hardcover runs to 880 pages.

That length is worth considering when planning your reading time, although page counts vary by edition. Give yourself room to finish it at a comfortable pace rather than treating the finale as a quick weekend read.

New readers should leave its full synopsis until they have finished Heat. Even official descriptions of a concluding volume can disclose circumstances you would rather discover in the story.

Do Publication Order and Reading Order Match?

Yes. Read Spark, Glow, Heat and Burn in that order.

The confusion comes from editions. The first three novels originally appeared in 2023, then received later releases through traditional print publishers. A newer publication date on a retailer’s page does not indicate a new installment.

For example, Spark of the Everflame originally appeared in June 2023, while its Atria hardcover followed in October 2024. Both occupy the first position in the series.

When buying copies, check the title and series number. Choose the format you prefer, then follow the four-book sequence.

Where Do the Bonus Chapters Fit?

Bonus material is supplementary to the main reading order.

Cole’s edition FAQ explains that some newer print editions include chapters from Luther’s perspective, while the sprayed-edge paperbacks do not include those bonus chapters. Check the description of the specific edition if that content matters to you.

My recommendation is to finish the relevant novel before reading its bonus material, unless the edition provides a clear placement instruction. That approach protects the main story’s reveals.

Cole also provides access to Glow bonus chapters and recaps of the first three books through her official reader resources. Save the recaps for books you have already finished; they are useful refreshers for returning readers.

Who Should Consider the Kindred’s Curse Saga?

Fantasy is my favorite genre, and world-building and magic systems are two of the things I look for when choosing a new series. For readers with similar priorities who also enjoy romantic tension, Cole’s premise offers a clear way to assess the fit.

Consider starting with Spark if you enjoy a continuing heroine’s journey, conflict between social groups, royal intrigue and romance that develops over multiple books.

If you prefer a complete reading plan before beginning, the availability of the finale is another practical advantage. You can choose your own pace through all four installments.
