Ali Hazelwood’s books are easy to enter and surprisingly easy to mix up. Her early romances feature women working in science, but she has also written a chess romance for young adults, paranormal romances, sports romance, holiday shorts and stories that first appeared as audiobooks. Then there are the new editions that make an older story look like a new release.

If you want a simple starting point, read The Love Hypothesis first. If you want every full-length novel, follow the publication list below. The few connections that matter most are read Bride before Mate and read Not in Love before Problematic Summer Romance. Most other books can be read on their own.

8Problematic Summer Romance2025Maya and Conor reunite at a wedding in Sicily; read after Not in Love.
9Mate2025Serena and Koen’s paranormal romance, set after Bride.

These are original book years, not the dates of later hardcover, paperback, film tie-in or audiobook editions. Hazelwood’s official book list separates novels from novellas and contemporary stories from paranormal ones.

Where should a new reader start?

The Love Hypothesis remains the natural introduction: it establishes Hazelwood’s blend of romance tropes, academic life and a heroine whose ambitions matter beyond her relationship. Olive Smith impulsively kisses professor Adam Carlsen and ends up in a fake relationship that grows increasingly hard to keep fake. The publisher’s guide to Hazelwood also points readers toward her science romances if that is what brought them here.

Already watched the movie and want another academic romance? Choose Love, Theoretically. Want Hazelwood’s take on rivals working together? Try Love on the Brain. Want something outside the laboratory? Start with Check & Mate for young adult chess romance or Bride for paranormal romance. You do not have to finish the science novels before moving to either.

The two pairs deserve a little more care. Bride introduces Misery Lark and Lowe Moreland’s world of Vampyres, Weres and Humans; Hazelwood describes Mate as its companion novel, following Serena Paris and Koen Alexander. Problematic Summer Romance shifts to Maya Killgore and Conor Harkness at a wedding in Italy. It has its own central couple, but reading Not in Love first gives you more context for Maya and the people around her.

Ali Hazelwood’s novellas and shorter fiction in order

If you are looking for a complete reading checklist, add the shorter works below. The year refers to the story’s initial release where applicable; some have since appeared in different formats.

First releaseStoryHow it fits
2022Under One RoofFirst of three linked STEM romances.
2022Stuck with YouSecond linked novella.
2022Below ZeroThird linked novella.
2023Loathe to Love YouCollection of the three stories above, with bonus material; do not count it as three new stories.
2023Story in From a Certain Point of View: Return of the JediA contribution to a multi-author Star Wars anthology, separate from her romances.
2024Two Can PlayVideo-game colleagues Viola and Jesse, originally released in audio.
2024Cruel Winter with YouSnowbound holiday short in the Under the Mistletoe collection.
2025FIRSTDystopian romance contribution to the limited After the Endanthology.
2025Hot for SlayerVampire and slayer short in the Scared Sexy collection.
2025BoundFirst paranormal audio novella in its pair.
2026UnboundSecond paranormal audio novella.

The Loathe to Love You trio follows different women and different couples, so you can read each separately or buy the collection. The author’s description of the collection confirms that it gathers Under One Roof, Stuck with You and Below Zero. Her Hot for Slayer page calls it a short story, which is useful when distinguishing it from the longer paranormal novels.

Availability matters here. Hazelwood says FIRST was made for a Kickstarter anthology and has no announced wide release. Meanwhile, Two Can Play began as audio, but Berkley published a print and ebook edition in February 2026. You might therefore see it listed with 2024 or 2026 depending on which edition a retailer is showing.

What Ali Hazelwood books are coming next?

Bound arrived in audio in 2025, followed by Unbound in audio in July 2026. The two stories come together in Bound and Unbound, scheduled for October 6, 2026 in print and ebook. This is a collected edition, not a third novella.

The next newly announced romance is Bad in Bed, scheduled as a full-cast Audible Original for October 22, 2026. It follows doctoral student Billie van Buren after a painful breakup and her growing connection with longtime frenemy Max. The Berkley listing schedules its first print and ebook editions for June 1, 2027. Those dates describe two formats of the same story; they are not separate books.

Which Ali Hazelwood books are being adapted?

Already released: The Love Hypothesis. As of this article’s September 26, 2026 update, the movie is streaming on Prime Video. Lili Reinhart plays Olive and Tom Bateman plays Adam; Claire Scanlon directed it. It premiered on September 23, so an article calling this film “upcoming” is out of date.

In development: Love, Theoretically. Deadline reported in June 2026 that Amazon MGM Studios acquired the film rights, with Sofia Alvarez attached to write and direct and Colleen Hoover among the producers. A rights deal and creative attachments are meaningful steps, but they do not establish a cast, filming date or release date.

In development: Deep End. Deadline reported in August 2026 that Netflix is developing a film, with Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Alex Cooper’s Unwell Productions producing. There is no confirmed premiere date. For readers deciding what to pick up next, the author’s synopsis describes Scarlett’s recovery from a diving injury and the relationship she begins with swimmer Lukas.

Book rights can be bought without a movie ultimately reaching the screen. Treat these two development projects as announced adaptations, and check for official casting, production and release announcements before adding dates to your calendar.

Quick answers

How many full-length Ali Hazelwood novels are there? Nine original full-length novels through September 2026, counting the young adult Check & Mate and the paranormal Bride and Mate. Collections, novellas and new editions are listed separately above.

Do the Ali Hazelwood books have to be read in order? Most do not. For the clearest character and world continuity, start with Bride before Mate and Not in Love before Problematic Summer Romance.

Is Loathe to Love You a new fourth novella? No. It collects Under One Roof, Stuck with You and Below Zero, plus bonus material.

Has The Love Hypothesis movie come out? Yes. It began streaming on Prime Video on September 23, 2026. The Love, Theoretically and Deep End films remain in development as of this update.

Hazelwood’s range is larger than a quick look at the matching illustrated covers suggests. Read in publication order if you enjoy watching an author change direction, or choose a lane: science, chess, paranormal, sports or a short romance for a weekend. The only rule I would keep is to read the connected pairs in sequence.
