Tremain has found a sharp angle on a familiar Gothic setting. A grand house in Cornwall, a socially vulnerable woman and a story shaped by secrets all recall Rebecca. But The Housekeeper gives its own narrator the chance to object to the part she has been assigned. That makes it a promising companion read for anyone who finished du Maurier’s novel still thinking about Mrs. Danvers.

The book and film also offer two separate ways into the same premise. The novel is available now in the UK and arrives in the US on October 6; the film is further along than a casting announcement, but its release date remains open. Until there is a trailer or a distributor’s dated announcement, the confirmed story is the one Tremain has already put on the page.
