A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Gets a 2027 Release Window as HBO Pauses New Spinoffs

HBO is preparing to send viewers back on the road with Dunk and Egg but the network is not rushing to launch additional Game of Thrones spinoffs.

HBO and HBO Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is expected to premiere during the first half of 2027. Bloys provided the updated release window while speaking with Deadline following the 2026 Emmy Awards.

The executive was also asked whether HBO was making progress on any other television spinoffs set in George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe. Beyond A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, Bloys said there was “nothing else” currently moving forward.

That answer suggests HBO is temporarily narrowing its television focus to the two Westeros series that have already reached audiences. It does not necessarily mean that every previously reported project has been permanently canceled, but fans should not expect another new Game of Thrones show to receive a series order in the immediate future.

When Will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Be Released?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will premiere during the first half of 2027, according to Bloys.

HBO has not announced an exact release date. The current window means the new season should arrive sometime between January and June 2027, assuming the schedule does not change.

Season 2 began production before the first season premiered and reportedly finished filming in August 2026. That relatively fast turnaround reflects the smaller scale of the series compared with House of the Dragon, which requires substantially more visual effects and time to create its dragons and enormous battle sequences.

The production schedule also supports HBO’s apparent plan to make A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms a more regular part of its programming. Rather than leaving viewers waiting several years between seasons, the network may be able to release Dunk and Egg’s adventures on something closer to an annual schedule.

That would be a welcome change for fantasy television fans who have become accustomed to long waits between seasons.

What Will Season 2 Be About?

The second season is expected to adapt The Sworn Sword, the second novella in George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series.

The story takes place after the events of The Hedge Knight and once again follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell are expected to return as Dunk and Egg, respectively.

In The Sworn Sword, Dunk enters the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey, an aging landed knight whose family has fallen from its former position of power. What initially appears to be a relatively minor dispute over water soon exposes old resentments connected to the Blackfyre Rebellion.

Dunk eventually finds himself caught between Ser Eustace and Lady Rohanne Webber, the formidable ruler known as the Red Widow. The conflict is smaller than the continent-spanning wars seen in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, but it reveals how the ambitions of noble families affect ordinary people throughout Westeros.

That more personal approach is one of the qualities that distinguishes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms from the franchise’s other television adaptations. Dunk and Egg are not sitting on the Iron Throne or commanding armies of dragons. They travel through the realm and encounter the consequences of decisions made by people far more powerful than they are.

HBO Is Focusing on Two Game of Thrones Shows

When Deadline asked Bloys about additional Game of Thrones spinoffs, the HBO executive pointed to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon before saying there was nothing else to announce.

The response represents a much more cautious strategy than fans might have expected a few years ago.

HBO has explored numerous potential projects set in Martin’s fictional world. Reported ideas have included a Jon Snow sequel, a series about Princess Nymeria titled Ten Thousand Ships, an animated project involving Corlys Velaryon’s famous voyages and stories set in other regions of the known world.

Development, however, does not guarantee that a television show will be produced. Networks frequently commission treatments, scripts and pilots before deciding whether a project has the story, creative team and budget required to become a full series.

Bloys has previously emphasized that HBO does not want to treat Game of Thrones like a franchise that must continually release new spinoffs. The network appears more interested in choosing individual stories that can justify their existence.

For now, that means concentrating on House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms instead of filling the schedule with loosely connected Westeros shows.

Does This Mean the Other Spinoffs Are Canceled?

Not necessarily.

Bloys’ remarks confirm that no other Game of Thrones television spinoff is actively approaching production or an HBO premiere. They do not amount to a formal cancellation announcement for every project that has previously been discussed.

Some ideas could remain in early development, be reworked with new writers or return years from now. HBO famously developed multiple potential successors to Game of Thrones before ultimately moving ahead with House of the Dragon.

The Jon Snow sequel provides one example of how uncertain that process can be. Kit Harington confirmed that a team explored possible stories about Jon’s life after the original series, but the project was shelved after they were unable to find an idea that felt strong enough to pursue.

An Arya Stark project has also been rumored, while Ten Thousand Ships and several animated concepts have been linked to HBO at different stages. Bloys’ latest answer indicates that none of those possibilities should currently be treated as confirmed shows.

Until HBO officially orders another series, they remain potential projects rather than guaranteed additions to the franchise.

What About the Aegon’s Conquest Movie?

HBO’s television pause does not appear to include Warner Bros.’ planned theatrical expansion of the franchise.

Warner Bros. has announced Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest as part of its movie slate beyond 2027. The film is expected to explore how Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their dragons to conquer most of Westeros and establish the Targaryen dynasty.

Because the project is being developed as a theatrical film through Warner Bros., it sits outside Bloys’ comments about HBO’s television plans.

The movie remains an important part of the franchise’s future, although it does not yet have a confirmed release date or announced cast. Like any project still in development, its schedule and creative direction could change before production begins.

A Smaller Westeros Story May Be HBO’s Best Path Forward

The success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms demonstrates that every story in Martin’s universe does not need to revolve around the Iron Throne, enormous wars or increasingly expensive dragons.

Dunk and Egg give viewers a different way to experience Westeros. Their adventures are funny, emotional and grounded in the lives of people who normally exist far outside the central struggle for power.

That distinction may also explain why HBO can move more quickly with the series. Its smaller cast, shorter seasons and more contained stories make it less complicated to produce than House of the Dragon while still giving fans a recognizable connection to the wider history of Westeros.

Pausing additional television spinoffs could ultimately protect the franchise from overexposure. HBO already has one large-scale political drama and one intimate adventure series. Developing fewer projects may give the network more time to find another story that adds something genuinely different.

The decision will disappoint viewers hoping to see characters such as Jon Snow, Arya Stark or Princess Nymeria return to television. Still, focusing on quality instead of producing a constant stream of spinoffs is probably the smarter long-term strategy.

What Comes Next for Westeros on HBO?

The immediate television future of the franchise now appears relatively clear.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is scheduled for the first half of 2027 and will continue Dunk and Egg’s travels by adapting The Sworn Sword. House of the Dragon remains HBO’s other active Game of Thrones series, with its story moving toward a fourth and final season.

Beyond those two shows, HBO is keeping its plans limited.

That does not mean the world of Game of Thrones has stopped expanding permanently. It means the network is currently relying on its two established series while waiting for the right story, and the right creative team, before approving another journey into Westeros.

For fans, the encouraging part of the announcement is that the wait for Dunk and Egg should not be especially long. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is now expected to arrive before the end of June 2027.
