When it comes to discovering great books, few platforms carry as much weight as Goodreads. Over the years, it has become the go-to place for readers to track what they’ve read, share reviews, and find their next favorite novel. But what really sets it apart? The readers themselves.

That’s exactly why we decided to dive into Goodreads’ 100 Best Books of All Time list. This isn’t a list curated by critics or publishers—it’s built by millions of passionate readers who voted for the books they truly love. And because of that, it feels authentic.

As you go through the list, you’ll notice a mix of iconic classics, modern bestsellers, and a few unexpected picks that make things even more interesting. It’s the kind of list that reflects real reading habits, not just literary prestige. Keep reading to see which books made the cut.

Goodreads’ 100 Best Books of All Time

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

When you talk about some of the best novels of all time, you have to mention Pride and Prejudice. It is a timeless romance novel that has aged well over the decades. And this novel only seems to be getting bigger every year.

Set in early 19th-century England, Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennet, a sharp and independent young woman navigating issues of class, marriage, and morality.

When she meets the wealthy but reserved Mr. Darcy, their initial misunderstandings and personal flaws create tension between them. As both characters confront their own pride and prejudice, they gradually come to better understand themselves and each other, leading to one of literature’s most beloved romantic arcs.

1984 by George Orwell

1984 book review

A sci-fi novel that has risen to popularity in modern times is 1984. When some ideas in this sci-fi and dystopian novel came true, people’s interest in the novel rose. The novel touches on issues such as mass surveillance, a controlling regime, and disinformation.

When Edward Snowden leaked the NSA’s mass surveillance of the public, the novel was mentioned by many and how it predicted the government spying on the public. That reignited interest in this novel and how the government was spying on its citizens

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

One of my favorite classics of all time has to be The Count of Monte Cristo. It is an adventure novel unlike anything else. The book is entertaining and has held up well centuries later. Who doesn’t love a good revenge story? Even after a couple centuries after it was published, this novel is still considered one of the best works of literature.

Edmond Dantès is a young sailor who has been falsely for a crime he didn’t commit. He loses his job and his wife and after years of captivity, he escapes and discovers a hidden fortune. Edmond returns as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and plans to use his newfound wealth to take revenge on all those who wronged him years ago.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

After seeing One Hundred Years of Solitude on multiple must read lists, I still didn’t get around to reading it when I should have. And after finally reading it, I was angry for putting this amazing novel off for as long as I did. This is truly one of the greatest novels ever written.

This novel tells the multi-generational story of the Buendía family in the fictional Latin American town of Macondo. Blending magical realism with historical and social commentary, the narrative explores themes of time, solitude, and the cyclical nature of human experience.

As the family repeats patterns of love, ambition, and tragedy, the line between reality and the supernatural blurs, creating a rich and haunting portrait of life and legacy.

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

book classic book review A Confederacy of Dunces
A Confederacy of Dunces book review

A book that doesn’t get the attention it deserves is A Confederacy of Dunces. The novel was published 11 years after the author committed suicide. Toole’s mother repeatedly asked Walker Percy, an author and a college instructor to read it.

When the novel was finally published, it was well received and Toole went on to win a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. And having read it, I can see why. It is a fantastic novel and you will be laughing the whole time.

Publishers don’t know always know about books and this book is a great example. Toole’s story is a tragic tale of unrecognized talent. Now if you go to New Orleans, you will most likely see a copy of A Confederacy of Dunces a few times. One of the reasons I visited New Orleans was because of how Toole writes about the city in his novel.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

If it wasn’t for To Kill a Mockingbird, I wouldn’t ever have fallen in love with reading and this blog would not have been made. This novel made me realize how amazing books are and seek more books to read, including classics. So, it should come as no surprise that this novel is considered by many as the most influential work of American literature.

Set in the racially segregated American South during the 1930s, the novel is told through the eyes of young Scout Finch as her father, lawyer Atticus Finch, defends a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman.

Through Scout’s innocent perspective, the story examines deep issues of racism, justice, and moral growth. As the trial unfolds, Scout and her brother Jem learn difficult truths about humanity, empathy, and standing up for what is right.

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

It has been almost a century since hardboiled fiction novels have had their heyday. But the classics that these era produced are still worth reading such as The Maltese Falcon is a detective novel filled with lots of murder and blood.

One of my favorite elements of a hardboiled fiction novel is the constant plot twists as if you are in a maze. There is never a dull moment and Dashiell Hammett’s novel delivers on all fronts.
