We all have those authors that we don’t even hesitate with. The moment they announce a new book, you already know you’re going to read it. No synopsis needed, no reviews required—you’re in.

Those are the authors that stick with you. The ones who have delivered time and time again and never seem to miss. Over the years, I’ve come across a lot of great writers, but there are three that stand above the rest for me.

These are my favorite authors: Kristin Hannah, Brandon Sanderson, and Neil Gaiman.

If you’ve been following what I read, this probably won’t come as a surprise. Fantasy and fiction are easily my favorite genres, and these three authors have mastered them in their own unique ways.

Kristin Hannah

Kristin Hannah is one of those authors who knows exactly how to make you feel something. Her writing is emotional, powerful, and honestly hard to forget once you’ve experienced it.

Some of her most well-known books include The Nightingale, The Four WindsThe Great AloneFirefly Lane, and Magic Hour. And what stands out about all of them is how real they feel. Even though these are fictional stories, they feel like they could happen to anyone.

That’s what makes her writing so impactful.

The Nightingale is easily one of the best historical fiction novels I’ve read. The way she tells the story of two sisters during World War II is incredible. It’s emotional, intense, and one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it.

What I appreciate most about Hannah is her ability to capture the human experience. Whether it’s love, loss, survival, or resilience, she writes it in a way that feels authentic. You’re not just reading about the characters—you’re experiencing everything with them.

She also has a deep catalog of books, which is great because there’s always something new to read. I still have a few of her novels on my list, and I’m looking forward to getting to them soon.

If you’ve read any of her books, you already know how good she is. And if you haven’t, she’s definitely an author you should check out.

Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson is a more recent addition to my list of favorite authors, but he quickly became one of the best I’ve read.

If you’re into fantasy, then you’ve probably heard of him. And if you haven’t, then you’re missing out on some of the best worldbuilding in the genre.

One of the things I love most about Sanderson is how much content he has. Finding a great book is always a win, but finding an author with multiple incredible series? That’s even better.

The Mistborn series is easily one of my all-time favorites. It’s one of those series that just pulls you in from the start and keeps you hooked all the way through. The magic system, the characters, and the overall story are all done incredibly well.

Then you have The Stormlight Archive, which is on a completely different level in terms of scale. These books are massive, but they are worth every page. I’m currently working my way through the series, and even though it’s a big commitment, I’ve been enjoying every bit of it.

He also has other great series like Skyward and The Reckoners, which show just how versatile he is as a writer.

Sanderson is the kind of author that fantasy fans can rely on. His consistency, creativity, and storytelling ability make him one of the best in the genre right now.

Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is an author I’ve been reading for years, and he continues to impress me every time.

What makes Gaiman stand out is how unique his stories are. His writing doesn’t feel like anything else out there. There’s always something a little different, a little strange—but in the best way possible.

Some of his most popular works include CoralineThe Graveyard BookAmerican Gods, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Each of these books offers something completely different, yet they all have that signature Gaiman feel.

The Graveyard Book is one of my personal favorites. It’s a simple story on the surface, but the way it’s written makes it feel magical and unforgettable.

He also has some lesser-known works like Stardust and Neverwhere, which are just as good and definitely worth checking out.

Another thing that stands out about Gaiman is how well his stories translate to other mediums. When your books turn into successful movies and TV shows, that says a lot about the quality of your storytelling.

That being said, it’s also worth mentioning that Gaiman has recently been surrounded by controversy, which has sparked a lot of discussion among readers online. Situations like this can sometimes change how people view an author and their work, and it’s something readers will have to decide for themselves moving forward.

For me, I try to separate the work from the author when possible, especially when the stories themselves have had such a strong impact. But at the same time, I understand why others may feel differently.

He’s still one of the most talented and unique writers out there, but like with many authors, there’s more to the conversation now than just the books.

He is an author whose books made me fall in love with reading. But it is harder to pick his books up and give them a read knowing what he has been accused of.

Final Thoughts

These are my three favorite authors, and honestly, it’s not even close. Each of them brings something different to the table, but they all share one thing in common—they consistently deliver great stories.

If any of them release a new book, I’m reading it. No questions asked.

If you haven’t read their work yet, you have plenty of great options to start with. And if you have, then you already know why they’re some of the best.

What about you? Who are your favorite authors? And which books would you recommend starting with?
