Late Night Show host Stephen Colbert is writing a new Lord of the Rings movie.
Yes, you read that right. Colbert is best known for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. But as many of you know, his show will be coming to an end on May 21, 2026.
Many people wondered what he would do after and now we know. Colbert will be writing for The Lord of the Rings franchise with his son.
“You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me, but the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in ‘The Fellowship’ that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day,” Colbert said in the video, referring to the first book in Tolkien’s trilogy. The announcement was published by Warner Bros.
Colbert has been open about his love for the classic fantasy series and is an expert when it comes to the books. For anyone that has watched his late night show, you will have heard him mention The Lord of the Rings here and there.
It isn’t often that fans of their favorite books get to contribute to the franchise. But Colbert is available after it was announced by CBS that Colbert’s late night show will be coming to an end soon.
Many people think it was political and that CBS may have ended the show to appease president Donald Trump who has publicly stated his dislike for Colbert.
The announcement was made in a video with “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson on Wednesday. Nobody saw this coming but as a fan of Colbert, I am happy that he gets to do what he is passionate about after his show comes to an end.
It has been revealed that the movie that Colbert is working in will be focusing on the early chapters focusing on Gollum. This part of the story was omitted fromt he original trilogy and something fans of the books really wanted to see.
The idea was pitched to Peter Jackson two years, before Colbert’s show was announced that it was coming to an end. Colbert didn’t think he had time to work on the movie but after the cancellation, that wasn’t the case anymore.
“I knew I couldn’t do that and do this show at the same time, but it turns out, I’m going to be free starting this summer,” Colbert said. “So if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to finish a television show, and I’ve got to write a movie script, but I will see you all in The Shire,”Colbert added.
The name of the movie at this moment is “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, and Colbert is working alongside Philippa Boyens to write it.
The synopsis reads : “Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo — Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”
