The mystery genre continues to dominate for a reason—it’s gripping, unpredictable, and nearly impossible to put down when done right. There’s nothing quite like trying to piece together clues, second-guess every character, and still getting blindsided by the ending.

That’s exactly why we had to put this list together.

If you’re looking for your next page-turner, here are some mystery books you absolutely need to read in 2026. Trust me, these are the kinds of stories that will keep you up way too late saying “just one more chapter.”

Before we get into it, let’s be honest—reading lists never really end. I’m still working my way through books I wanted to read in 2025, and at this rate, it might take a while before I catch up. But that’s part of the fun. There’s always another great book waiting.

For now, though, I wanted to highlight a few standout mystery novels that are 100% worth your time.

And of course, there’s only one way to start a list like this—with a legend.

You can’t talk about mystery without mentioning Agatha Christie. Even if you don’t read the genre often, she’s an author you have to experience at least once. Her storytelling, her twists, and her ability to keep readers guessing are unmatched.

The other books on this list hold their own as well. These are the kinds of novels that remind me why I keep coming back to mystery again and again. The tension, the reveals, the satisfaction of a well-executed ending—it never gets old.

If you’re a fan of the genre, you’re going to want to check these out.

Take a look at the full list below.

Another mystery novel that has become a must read is The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. It is a brilliant mystery and thriller novel that has one of the best twists of any book that I have read. I loved this novel and when you reach the plot twist, you realize the clues were always there.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist and is fascinated with Alicia Berenson’s case. She shoots her husband five times and never speaks another word. Everyone is curious why she killed her husband and went silent afterwards.

While the first two novels are book you will most likely see on many lists, The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, translated by Alexander O. Smith is one that most people wouldn’t have heard of before.

That is unfortunate because you are missing out on one of the best detective novels that I have read. Just like the last book, the plot twist in this novel is amazing and it had me in awe. I really loved this novel and it is a reason why I love reading Japanese mystery novels.

Yasuko’s life follows a routine as she works at a bento shop in Tokyo, raising her daughter by herself. But things change drastically when her ex-husband shows up at her job one day and he doesn’t plan to leave her alone. A confrontation breaks out and her ex husband ends up dead.

It is up to Detective Kusanagi to solve the mystery of the murder of a man that is found dead under mysterious circumstances. He doesn’t believe Yasuko’s alibi and tries to crack the case with the help of his friend, a university physics professor. But his friend thinks that whoever is behind the murder is brilliant and does his own digging into the murder and his old friend from college.

Conclusion

These are my three mystery novels that you must read in 2026. I wanted to start of this list with classic mystery novels that I enjoyed and know that fellow readers will also love.

If you haven’t read And Then There Were None yet, now is the best time to do so. It has sold over a hundred million copies and has stayed popular since publication for good reason. I love Agatha Christie novels because they are fun mysteries to solve that aren’t cozy reads and an all around pleasant read.

The other two have amazing plot twists and are great mysteries that I still can’t get over. These novels remind me why I love mystery and detective novels. Until next time, happy reading!
