Over the past two decades, Brandon Sanderson has become one of the most influential voices in modern fantasy. With a massive bibliography that rivals nearly any contemporary author, Sanderson’s opinions on the genre naturally carry weight. That is why his comments on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series continue to spark discussion among fantasy readers.
Before addressing the criticism, Sanderson has made one point very clear: he deeply respects Martin and his work. In a Reddit comment, Sanderson stated that he has “enormous respect for GRRM and his talent as a storyteller.” His remarks come not from hostility, but from thoughtful engagement with a series he genuinely admires.
However, admiration does not exclude critique.
Why Sanderson Finds A Song of Ice and Fire Too Pessimistic
A Song of Ice and Fire is widely regarded as one of the most important fantasy series ever written. Its intricate politics, morally complex characters, and subversion of traditional fantasy tropes helped redefine the genre. At the same time, the series is infamous for its relentless darkness.
Sanderson has noted that Martin’s books lean heavily toward pessimism. Characters frequently suffer brutal losses, endure extreme trauma, or die suddenly. Even those who survive are rarely spared from prolonged hardship. For some readers, that realism is compelling. For others, it can feel overwhelming.
Sanderson highlighted Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline as a point where the brutality went too far for him.
“With Ice and Fire, I specifically found Daenerys’s plot too brutal,” Sanderson wrote. “I’m all for putting characters into terrible situations, and letting horrible things happen. But her plot crossed the line for me… when I was done with it, I just felt sick.”
He acknowledged the brilliance of Martin’s execution, but emphasized that the emotional cost outweighed the narrative payoff for him as a reader.
Explicit Content and Reader Accessibility
Sanderson has also explained that his personal beliefs influence his reaction to the series. As a Mormon, he is uncomfortable with the level of explicit sexual violence and graphic content found in the books. Even setting religion aside, this aspect of A Song of Ice and Fire has long been a barrier for many readers.
The extreme violence and sexuality are one reason HBO—known for pushing boundaries—was uniquely positioned to adapt the series for television. While Game of Thrones expanded Martin’s audience dramatically, it also reinforced the idea that the story is not meant for everyone.
A Deliberate Exploration of Cruelty
Daenerys is only one of many characters who suffer extensively throughout the series. Martin’s antagonists often wield unchecked power, creating a world where cruelty thrives and justice is rare. For many readers, this is the point.
Martin appears to be exploring how people behave when given absolute power and no consequences. The series strips away romantic notions of heroism and instead presents a harsh, often unsettling version of human nature.
That approach resonates deeply with some readers—and repels others.
Respectful Criticism in Fantasy Literature
It is relatively uncommon for major authors to publicly critique the work of their peers. J. R. R. Tolkien famously declined to review Dune, choosing silence over public criticism out of respect for another writer.
Sanderson’s comments stand out because they are measured, respectful, and clearly rooted in admiration. While some fans of A Song of Ice and Fire may take issue with his perspective, his criticism reflects a broader conversation about tone, content, and what readers seek from fantasy.
A Series Worth Reading—With Caveats
Ultimately, Sanderson remains a fan of Martin’s work, even if it does not align with his personal tastes or storytelling philosophy. A Song of Ice and Fire is not for every reader, and that is perfectly fine.
Still, for fans of the fantasy genre, it remains an essential series—one that challenges expectations and provokes strong reactions. Whether readers embrace it or struggle with its darkness, its influence on modern fantasy is undeniable.
Respectful disagreement, after all, is part of what keeps the genre evolving.
