There are moments when all you want to do is devour a great novel, and in those moments nothing delivers quite like a gripping thriller. The suspense, the twists, and the nonstop action make these books nearly impossible to put down. That’s why we’ve selected three thriller novels that every book lover should check out. Keep reading to see which ones made our list!
One of the best things about thriller novels is the pacing. Unlike some genres that take time to build momentum, thrillers tend to move fast from the very first page. There’s rarely a dull moment, and the story constantly pushes the protagonist into new and dangerous situations.
More often than not, the main character isn’t carefully planning every move—they’re reacting to the chaos unfolding around them. That sense of urgency is what keeps readers hooked and makes thrillers so addictive.
Whenever I start a thriller novel, I know I need to be prepared. There’s a good chance I might end up reading the entire book in one sitting. It takes a lot of willpower to close the book and tell myself I’ll continue tomorrow instead of staying up late to finish it.
The three books on this list are perfect examples of what makes thrillers so great. They’re packed with suspense and excitement, but they also have strong storytelling that never feels rushed. It’s the perfect balance of fast-paced action and compelling narrative—something my sleeping schedule definitely appreciates.
If you’re looking for a suspenseful read that will keep you turning pages, check out the three thriller novels we recommend below!
Fast-Paced Thrillers You Need to Read
- The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
- The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
- Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Maltese Falcon

You won’t find a better detective and thriller novel to read than The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. It is one of the best novels from the Golden Age of Mystery and a must read for any fans of the genre. This novel has come to define the hardboiled fiction genre and it will lead you down a rabbit hole to read even more hardboiled novels as a result.
Samuel ‘Sam’ Spade and his partner Miles Archer are both private detectives and they are approached by “Miss Wonderley” for a job She wants them to follow Floyd Thursby who has run off with her sister. It sounds like a basic job and the duo accepts.
Archer takes the first shift and follows Thursby but is shot and killed. Thursby is later also killed and Sam is suspected of killing him as revenge. Sam approaches Miss Wonderley who is actually Brigid O’Shaughnessy and she opens up about the Maltese Falcon statuette that is worth a lot of money.
Brigid isn’t the only person after the statuette as Sam is visited by another person who wants him to find the Maltese Falcon. Multiple parties are pursuing the Maltese Falcon and it may be the reason why Archer was killed. Sam is caught up in the chase for the falcon and can’t trust anyone
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was published in 1926 and is considered Agatha Christie’s best work by many. And after reading it, I can see why and I would even agree with that statement. Even though And Then There Were None has sold over a hundred million copies, this is the one that will stay with you a lot longer.
Dr. James Sheppard is the narrator of the novel and introduces himself and talks about a murder that happened in his town. He uses his memoirs to tell the story of what happened. It all started when a wealthy widow named Mrs. Ferrars commits suicide, shocking everyone. Her fiancé Roger Ackroyd is distressed with her suicide.
A dinner is hosted at Mr. Ackroyd’s home in the evening and he is joined by sister-in-law Mrs Cecil Ackroyd and her daughter Flora Major Blunt, Ackroyd’s personal secretary Geoffrey Raymond, and Dr James Sheppard. After the dinner is over, Ackroyd tells Dr. Sheppard that Mrs. Ferrers told him that she was being blackmailed over the murder of her husband. A letter arrives for Ackroyd from the late Mrs. Ferrers and Dr. Sheppard is asked to leave.
Once Dr. Sheppard arrives home, he receives a call that Ackroyd has been found murdered. But when Dr. Sheppard arrives to the scene, the butler says he made no such call. They both check in on Ackroyd in his study and he is dead, stabbed to death with a weapon from his own collection.
Hercule Poirot does not believe that Paton, who Flora is engaged to, is the murderer as the evidence points towards him. That makes Poirot come out of retirement and take on the case. As he tries to solve the case, he discovers many secrets and motives and the one who killed Roger Ackroyd.
Mexican Gothic

One of the benefits of Tik Tok taking off was that books got more exposure. The BookTok community became popular early on and it led to many novels making the New York Times bestseller list as a result. One of the books that became a fan favorite was Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
If you love a good thriller and horror novel, then you will love this book. The writing, plot, and the characters are well written. But my favorite part of any Moreno-Garcia novel is how she incorporates settings into her novel, often times personifying them. This is a novel I would strongly recommend to all readers.
The novel takes place in Mexico City in the 1950’s and starts off with socialite Noemí Taboada being summoned home by her father. He is worried about Noemí’s cousin Catalina who recently got married. He recently received a letter from her in which she claims that her husband Virgil Doyle is trying to poison her.
That leads to Noemí’ being sent to the Doyle’s home called High Place which is located in the mountains of a small town called El Triunfo. Her first few days in the house are unwelcoming and her freedom is restricted. But it doesn’t deter Noemí as she tries to puzzle out what is going on in High Place.
What Noemí learns is that the Doyle’s have a long history of murder and violence. Weird dreams haunt Noemí as she tries to uncover what the Doyle’s are hiding from her. But she finds an unlikely companion in High Place and that may be the key to escaping this place with her cousin and this cursed family.
Conclusion
I love a good thriller novel but not all thrillers are equal. Some novels will have a million plot twists and consider that a good thriller novel. But the thrillers that I love are ones with substance, intricate characters, and one with a great story.
These three are thrillers that I still think about often till this day. They are all completely different from each other and their uniqueness makes me love them that much more. These authors defies normal expectations and ended up writing novels that will be around for a long time.
What did think of these three thriller novels? Have you read any of them? What other thriller novels would you add to this list? Let us know in the comments below. Until next time, happy reading!
