Jumping into a new genre can be intimidating, but it’s also part of the fun. Science fiction has a unique way of pushing boundaries, asking big questions, and taking readers on journeys that can make you laugh, cry, and rethink everything in between. For this list, we’re focusing on books that longtime sci-fi fans widely agree are must-reads—especially for newcomers looking to fall in love with the genre. You can check out the full list below!
- Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clark
- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
- Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
- 1984 by George Orwell
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
One of the most popular authors of sci-fi is Arthur C. Clark. There is a reason that an award has been named after him. And while you can start with any novel by Clarke, the one I would recommend is Childhood’s End.
Clark imagines an alien invasion and it is a well written novel that showcases Clark’s storytelling ability. In an era where sci-fi novels were not as popular, Clark was making a name for himself and even years later, his novels hold up well.

The sci-fi novel that stuck with me was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick. And yes, this novel does get a little weird but the overall plot is great and it is thought-provoking. Now, androids are a common occurrence in sci-fi novels. But without novels like these, we wouldn’t have gotten novels like The Murderbot Diaries.
Many people expect sci-fi novels to be serious and deal with world ending scenarios. And yes, that is often the case but that doesn’t mean that they can’t also make you laugh. When I started reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, I did not know that I would be reading one of my favorite series of all time.
This series is hilarious and clever and will change how you think of sci-fi novels. Before this novel, I had a limited view of what a sci-fi book was and after reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide changed my perception of them. I was laughing constantly throughout this novel and it is still one of my favorite series that I have read.
The last book I want to discuss is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. This is a novel that is deceptive and has some great twists that will catch you off guard. With all that said, I do think this is a great novel that every fan of sci-fi that is just getting into the genre needs to read.
It is a novel with heavy topics but those are some of the best sci-fi novels. You will either love Ender’s Game and go down a rabbit hole or never think of it again. I still think of this novel and will be revisiting it soon because I read it early on in my reading journey and want to see it with a new lens now that I have read dozens of sci-fi novels since then.
Conclusion
Sci-fi is easily one of my favorite genres and it has surpassed mystery novels in recent years. Like many readers, I was hesitant to read sci-fi books because I believed it was only about aliens and space travel. But it is so much more than that and has some of my all time favorite novels.
These are just some of the novels that new readers getting into sci-fi novels should read. This is a list that I can rant on about endlessly. But that would be counterproductive.
For now, these are the novels I recommend to new readers. What other sci-fi novels do you recommend to new readers getting into science fiction? Let us know in the comments below!
