Today, we will be reviewing A Thousand Li by Tao Wong, a 12 part Lit RPG series. We will dive into the first novel and see if this novel is worth reading or a bust.
This year, I wanted to switch things up and read books outside of my comfort zone. That is how I got into reading Lit RPG and it has been a fun and surprising experience.
I ended up choosing A Thousand Li because of the interesting book blurb. And I am glad because it was a positive experience with my first Lit RPG novel.
A Thousand Li Summary
Long Wu Ying is training in the small village he calls home when the army arrives. Wu Ying and his fellow villagers are conscripted and must join the war effort. But a wound leaves hurt and he is left behind. As luck would have it, Wu Ying finds himself an opportunity to join the Verdant Green Waters Sect.
Now, Wu Ying must decide if that is the path he wants to choose. It is not an easy path and it will take him away from his family and village. But it is also the one that can give him the power to protect his family.
That is how Wu Ying finds himself on the road to immortality. He must become stronger and rise in the ranks of the Verdant Green Waters Sect and make a name for himself. Only then will he be truly in control of his own destiny.
A Thousand Li is a 12 book series that follows Wu Ying’s growth. I really enjoyed these novels and being able to see Wu Wing’s adventures. This isn’t your typical Lit RPG but it is addicting nonetheless. Tao Wong is a fantastic writer and I can’t wait to read more of his work.
Commentary
A Thousand Li was the first Lit RPG novel I read and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. It isn’t your typical Lit RPG novel but it does cover most of the format the genre is known for. Many novels will have a system that helps the protagonist but in this novel, that isn’t the case.
If it wasn’t for this novel, I don’t know if I don’t know if I would have continued reading Lit RPG’s. This novel and series is well written and I will admit, it got slow for me when I reached the 11th novel in the series. But before then, I was unable to stop reading.
As I made my way to reading other Lit RPG novels, I realized how diverse the genre truly is. There are so many creative and fun novels and I was eager to read as many as possible. Tao is a great storyteller and does a wonderful job of combing Lit RPG with a philosophical approach.
Conclusion
If you haven’t read a Lit RPG novel before, them this is a great one to start with. The storytelling and pacing make this a standout in a crowded genre. Wong understands what makes this genre unique and incorporates it well into this fantastic novel.
I don’t think there needed to be 12 novels and it slows down a bit as Wu Ying gets older and becomes an elder. But before then, the novel will keep you hooked. Even after having read over a dozen Lit RPG novels, I have this one high on my list. Until next time, happy reading!
