It is impossible to meet someone who hasn’t heard of this series. I would say is the second most well known fantasy series after J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings series. But not everyone has read for a variety of reasons. That is why we will be reviewing this series and see how good it actually is

The Chronicles of Narnia Summary

The series follows the story of four children who are named Ann, Martin, Rose and Peter. While playing hie and seek, they accidentally end up going to Narnia, a world where animals can talk and magic is real.

The children get caught up in a battle between animals and the witch that rules Narnia. It is up to the children to save their friend and the residents of Narnia with the help of a lion and new friends they make. But if they fail, all of Narnia will fall as a result.

The Chronicles of Narnia Background

The Chronicles of Narnia is a seven book series that was released between 1950 to 1956. Lewis did not write the novels in the order that they were published. The books take inspiration from his personal life as well as literary influences.

It should come as no surprise that the series has sold over 120 copies since publication. In 1956, Lewis won the Carnegie Medal for The Last Battle, the final book in the series.

Commentary

Many people have read the books and it is a big part of many people’s childhood. Even today, it is still inspiring books such as The Magicians. While the books are meant for children, there are a lot of adult themes and religion throughout the book.

The word Narnia derives from a city in Italy called Narni. The latin translation is Narnia and Lewis loved how the name sounded so he chose it for his novel. And he was right, the word Narnia encapsulates the series well and makes you think of magic.

The novels are short and you can read them in a few days with ease. I enjoyed the e world building by Lewis and how the children were dealing with adult stuff with the mindset of children. You can tell he has a good understanding of a child’s mindset.

The writing is great, Narnia is great, and it is easy to see why millions of people love these timeless children’s books. And while there are a of religious and philosophical themes, it doesn’t take away from the great storytelling.

At the end of the day, it is a great children’s series that fantasy lovers should check out. Until next time, happy reading!
