But not everyone wants their novel to be realistic. Sometimes all we want is explosions and a lot of fighting scenes. And The Hunt for Red October and The Bourne Supremacy are two action packed novels that don’t ever slow down. The movies have made the novels that will be remembered for the next century or so at least.

The spy franchise that is beloved universally is James Bond and From Russia with Love is one that every fan needs to read. The whole series is fantastic and the novels are short but every page is full of action and great writing. Ian Fleming is another author that borrowed from his experience as a former spy which might be why his novels are as popular as they are.

Lastly, every fan of spy novels needs to read The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth. The novel flips everything a book is supposed to do upside down and yet, it works perfectly. We are told the conclusion in the first few pages and yet, the novel keeps you entertained until the last page.
