Over the past year or so, I made it my mission to read as many Agatha Christie novels as possible. And I made a lot of headway into my goal. But too much of anything can be bad for you. And that is why I have decided to take a break from reading Agatha Christie novels.

My love of mystery novels goes back decades and one of the novels that stuck with me early on was And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. There is a good reason why Christie is considered the queen of mystery and I loved the formats of her books.

After that, I read some of her more popular novels such as Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express. But after reading her most known works, I ventured out to other popular mystery books and found other authors that I also enjoyed reading.

With so many amazing old and new books out there, I soon forgot about Agatha Christie until last year. As I write one of my articles centered around Agatha Christie novels, I realized I hadn’t read many of them. And thus began my journey into reading a bunch of Christie novels in a short span.

My goal was a big one because Christie has written around 70 or so book and that isn’t including her short stories or plays. I decided to read all the Miss Marple stories which I enjoyed. The books range from okay to great but if you read too many of them in a short span, you realize that Christie used a lot of the same writing styles and twists.

I don’t think Christie herself realized that she reused some plot twists over or that Miss Marple’s dialogue can be repetitive. And that made some of the twists not as good as they would have been had I not just read a Miss Marple novel a few days ago.

That experience led me to wonder if I was reading too many Christie novels in a short span. When these novels would be released, readers would go years between Miss Marple novels and may have forgotten Christie’s popular traits.

After finishing the Miss Marple series, I dove into the Hercule Poirot series and while these novels are different, I was definitely feeling the burnout of reading too many Christie novels. That lessened my enjoyment and I knew I needed a break from Christie.

And here we are. I haven’t read a Christie novel in a couple months and I am glad for the break. I have a ton of reading material so I don’t think I will be returning to her books anytime soon. And there are other mystery authors who I want to check out also.

But this time, I won’t be reading to many books from the same author in a short span. With this year coming to an end soon, my reading list will grow, giving me even more books to read and enjoy. Until next time, happy reading!
