One of the most critically beloved novels of 2023 was Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. I have unfortunately not read this novel yet and will be fixing this mistake in the coming months.
A novel that I made sure I read when it was released was Yellowface by R.F. Kuang. She is an incredible storyteller and I will read anything she reads because I know it will be amazing. Yellowface is a story about race and a commentary that was needed.
My favorite novel that was released in 2023 was The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. The setup, characters, storytelling, plot, and message of this novel will have you crying by the end of the novel. McBride is a gifted writer and one that everyone should read.
Another novel on this list that I loved a lot was The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. This is a novel about identity, family, loss, and Peters tackles al these topics with a surgical hand. It is still hard to believe that this is her debut novel.
