Choosing what historical fiction book to read next is always a challenge for me. That is why I turn to the internet for help. And that has led us to looking at Goodreads list of the best historical fiction books to read. Keep reading to find out what books made the list!
There are tons of historical fiction books out there and knowing what to read next can be difficult. I personally like to browse various lists and make a list of books I want to read. That means I will browse Goodreads and see what books are trending.
One list that is perfect for historical fictions fans is the list of the best historical fiction books according to Goodreads. This list includes some of the most popular and beloved historical fiction books that many people know but may not have read.
This is a great place to start for new readers as well as fans of the genre. Even for me, I haven’t read all of the books on this list. I will try to change that in the coming months and review them in the near future. You can see the full list below!
Goodreads’ List of Best Historical Fiction Books
- Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
- Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
- The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
- The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
- A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
- Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
- Shōgun (Asian Saga, #1) by James Clavell
- The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
If you haven’t read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, then you need to add it to your reading list right away. The novel has been surrounded in controversy and you can read about that here. But overall, it is a good novel and one that you should give a try.
Seeing my favorite novel on this list is always a positive sign. The Book Thief is a novel I revisit often and no matter how many historical fiction books I read, it will have a special place in my heart. At this point, it is a classic novel in my opinion.
Speaking of classic novels, this list has two that everyone needs to read. Gone with the Wind and A Tale of Two Cities are two books that many readers probably read in school. Those are books that you should definitely need to read outside of school and read them for your own pleasure.
I was surprised to see Shōgun make the top ten and that might be due to recency bias. The novel was recently adapted into a fantastic TV show. I enjoyed the novel a lot which led to me hating the show for cutting out many important scenes. Still, this is a great read even it isn’t a novel I’d put highly on my list of historical fiction books.
Conclusion
These are Goodreads’ list of the best historical fiction books that you need to read and check out. There are classics and amazing novels that are worth reading at least once. And Shōgun is still an enjoyable read even if I don’t think it should have made the list. Happy reading!
