No, you didn’t read that wrong and this isn’t an Onion article. Jennifer L Armentrout’s new novel will smell like garlic and I don’t know how to feel about that.

In an interesting marketing gimmick, Armentrout’s newest novel The Primal of Blood and Bone has 1000 printed versions that used garlic-infused ink to print 1,000 copies. The obvious question is why and who would even want to have a novel that always smells like garlic?

What makes this news even more interesting is that the novel doesn’t even mention garlic repelling vampires. I do think that trope is over done and do appreciate it not being used but that doesn’t explain why the novel smells like garlic then.

The reason for the garlic smell is because of a partnership with the mayonnaise brand Hellmann’s. The novel comes in a big coffin shaped package with a free bottle of Hellmann’s garlic aioli. This is a great stunt in drawing attention to the novel and making it easily sharable on Tik Tok.

I think this is fun and makes it a special event which only makes readers more excited. The people who bought the coffin shaped packages of the book are enjoying it which is what matters. They should have tied it better to the novel but you can’t have everything.

What do you think of a book that smells like garlic? I think it ultimately depends on how strong the smell is and if you like the smell of garlic or not. At least it will keep most vampires out of your home depending on what their weaknesses are. Happy reading!
