The classics are always worth reading at least once in my opinion. We are lucky that there are millions of books released every year but that wasn’t always the case. Many modern authors have been influenced by classic novels and today we will be reviewing Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Pride and Prejudice Summary
In early 19th century in England, the Bennet family is excited about the new visitor in their village, Mr. Bingley. He is a rich and handsome bachelor and Mrs. Bennet plans to marry one of her five daughters to him. At a ball, Elizabeth meets Mr. Bingley and his close friend Mr. Darcy who comes across as rude and Elizabeth takes a disliking to him.
At the ball, Mr. Bingley takes a liking to Jane, the oldest of the Bennet sisters and Mrs. Darcy pushes Jane to get close to him in the coming months. Mr. Darcy on the other hand was not initially smitten with Elizabeth but over time, he finds himself constantly thinking about her.

Another person looking to get married soon is Mr. Collins and he visits the Bennet family looking to find a wife among the five sisters. He chooses Elizabeth to be his wife but her feelings aren’t reciprocal. Around this time, the Bennet family meets George Wickham, who tells them of Mr. Darcy’s unfair treatment towards him in the past.
Things looked good between Jane and Mr. Bingley but suddenly, Mr. Bingley moves away and Jane is heartbroken. Elizabeth thinks that his family and friends played a part in Mr. Bingley’s change of heart. And when Elizabeth finds herself in Mr. Darcy’s mansion and keeps running into him. And while there, Elizabeth soon learns that her younger sister Lydia has done something unthinkable that has the Bennet family in shock.
Commentary
As you can guess from the summary above, there are a lot of marriages and proposals in this book. But ultimately, the novel is about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. What starts off as a bad first impression, Mr. Darcy is trying to redeem himself throughout the rest of the novel. Austen does a wonderful job in telling a fun drama filled novel that will keep you hooked.
The cast of characters are interesting and keep the novel enjoyable. I do think Mrs. Darcy and Lydia are very one dimensional and serve one purpose in the book and that’s it. Even Jane is not as complex as she could have been. Elizabeth is the soul of this novel and is smart and witty, always ready to debate anyone with facts and her strong belief.
Conclusion
As you may have noticed, I don’t often review many romance novels. That isn’t a genre that I ever really got into. But after reading Pride and Prejudice, I do think I will read some more romance books. Great writing is great writing and I am always eager to read a good novel, no matter the genre. And this was a fantastic read and I will be checking out more Jane Austen novels in the future.
