The Five Must Read Classics

To Kill a Mockingbird

One of if not my favorite books of all time has to be To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The novel is about racial injustice in the south told from the persepctive of a child. It was Harper Lee’s only novel released by her while she was alive and it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961.

The Catcher in the Rye is an interesting pick because it is a novel that readers either love or hate. There is no in between when it comes to this book. After revisiting this novel, I do believe it deserves the recognition it has gotten over the decades. There is a lot to take away and the novel is even more relevant in this day and age.

One of the most popular novels ever written had to be The Handmaid’s Tale. Some people may have read it in school while others read it for fun but either way, it is an impactful novel. The T.V. show has made it relevant again as well as introducing it to a newer generation.

The Count of Monte Cristo

A novel that I recommend to anyone that enjoys reading is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It is a fun adventure novel about revenge and I found it impossible to put down. It is The Great Gatsby before The Great Gatsby and even centuries later, makes for a great read.

Pride and Prejudice

Lastly, it is impossible not to mention Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. The brilliant novel is funny and charming as it tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy and their romantic clash. When it was released, the novel received positive reviews and was beloved by the public.

But that doesn’t mean everyone loved it. Mark Twain was not a fan of the novel and wrote to his friend a letter saying “Everytime I read ‘Pride and Prejudice’ I want to dig [Austen] up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.” Still, it is one of the must read classics and it goes to show you, no matter how good a novel is, somebody will always hate it.
