Today, we will be reviewing The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, a fantasy novel by one of the most popular authors in the genre. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novel and if you should read it next!
The Devils Summary
Alex is a thief that is currently running away from a bunch of criminals that want to collect the debt that Alex owes. They soon catch her but as luck would have it, Alex is saved by Duke Michael of Nicaea. He tells her that she is Princess Alexia Pyrogennetos, the rightful heir to Troy.
This comes as a shock to Alex but she decided to play along and see how much she can swindle from her “uncle.” We also meet Brother Diaz who is called to the Holy City. He expects a promotion and while he does receive that, it isn’t quite what he expected. He is assignedd to lead the secretive Chapel of the Holy Expediency which are some of the most powerful criminals known to the world.
Alex, Brother Diaz, and the devils have to take Alex to the capital and put her on the throne. But the journey starts off on a bad note as a group of monster attacks the traveling group. Can Alex make it to the capital before she is killed and how much can she trust the devils who are accompanying her. Will she sit on the thrown or be buried six feet deep instead?
Commentary
The Devils was released on May 2025 and is the first book in the series. James Cameron has already bought the rights to the movie and is planning to work on it after the third Avatar movie.
if you haven’t read any Joe Abercrombie novels, then you are missing out. The First Law series is one of my favorite series and a must read. This genre and most novels by Abercrombie tend to fall in the grim dark fantasy genre that deviates from your typical fantasy novels.
The grimdark genre is any fantasy novel that has a “a tone, style, or setting that is particularly dystopian, amoral, and violent.” Even within grimdark novels, there tends to be a big difference in violence. Abercrombie does a wonderful job of not being too dark or violent which I can’t say for other novels in this subgenre.
I really enjoyed this novel a lot and the cast of characters are fun and entertaining. Each of the devils can get a spinoff novel and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do. The fighting scenes are great and the villains are straight out of a fantasy novel. You get battles in all sorts of environments and while the setup of villains popping pop after the other does get old fast, it is entertaining every time.
Conclusion
I am glad that I picked up this novel and gave it a read. As someone who loves a good fantasy novel, this novel surpassed all my needs. The Devils got five stars from me and I will be tuning into this series and reading them as soon as they are released. Happy reading!
