In Cold Blood
An influential novel on the list that everyone needs to check out is In Cold Blood by Truman Capone. One reason for that is it birthed the genre of true crime. The book Helter Skelter would not have existed if this book was never published. With that said, it needs to be mentioned that the book does add fictitious events to make the book feel more real.

In Cold Blood is about a real life murder that took place in 1959 in Holcomb, Kansas. The Clutter family, a family of four, was found murdered and there was no motive for the crime and almost no clues. But a single clue led to the arrest of the murders.
Capone interviews the people of Holcomb as well as the criminals responsible. This is considered one of the first nonfiction novels. Since publication, people have come out and said that some events in the book never happened. And another fun fact is that Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, went with Capone to interview the residents of Halcomb.
The Godfather
Everyone knows about The Godfather movies and rightfully so. The first movie is considered one of the best movie of all time. And it is one of the few times that the movie is better than the books. But that shouldn’t take anything away from the book that was adapted into the movie.
The novel is about the The Corleone family and the Five Families that form the New York Mafia. All the families avoid conflict with each other and work together to run New York City. But the peace is shattered when Don Vito Corleone is shot by men hired by an opposing Family.
That leads to two of Corleone’s two step and lead the family as a full-scale war breaks out. This novel is amazingly written and you will be hooked from start to finish. Even if you prefer the movie, the novel is still a great experience for fans of The Godfather.
Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a classic that is a must read no matter what your favorite genre is. It is a sci-fi novel that is also thought provoking. The novel is considered the first sci-fi novel and holds up well even centuries later. Few monsters become mainstream yet Frankenstein has, despite many people never reading the novel behind it.

The novel follows Victor Frankenstein, a young man obsessed with alchemy. His obsession to modern science leads him to creating a monster using human body parts he stole. What he creates is a grotesque monster that disgusts Victor, making him flee in terror. But the monster is not done with Victor and what follows is a tale unlike any other.
The Talented Mr. Ripley
A classic thriller that I loved is The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. It is a fun novel that follows the descent into madness of Ripley and what he will do to keep his new life going. Highsmith is a unique character that explores the true nature of a person and what people are capable of. There hasn’t been another author like her and most likey ever won’t be.
In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom Ripley is up to his old tricks, scamming people to survive. His luck has been bad and he is fed up with his life. And he fears that the police are going to arrest his for his scams. But his luck turns around when he is approached by a shipping magnate named Herbert Greenleaf. He wants Ripley to convince his son to return home from Italy.
Ripley thus finds himself heading to Italy with Greenleaf funding his trip. But Greenleaf’s son Dickie isn’t fond of Tom and suspects Tom. It is now up to Tom to continue this scam and live the life he always wanted. But his lies are bound to catch up to him.
Mexican Gothic
This is a novel that I have seen on many BookTok lists and finally got around to reading and I loved every second of it. Mexican Gothic is a horror novel about a haunted house with a fun new spin on the genre. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an amazing author and her writing style is unique and her attention to detail make her novels feel like a trip to another time period.
In Mexican Gothic, socialite Noemí Taboada is sent to visit her cousin Catalina who recently got married. Catalina thinks her husband is trying to poison her and it is up to Noemí to make sure everything is okay.

That is how Noemí finds herself at the Doyle’s home called High Place which is located in the mountains of a small town called El Triunfo. Noemí soon finds herself restricted and and trapped. But when she learns the dark secret of the Doyle family, she is caught up in the middle of it all.
Now, she must turn to an unlikely companion in High Place if she plans on escaping. Or she might be stuck there forever otherwise.
