If you had to ask me to choose one genre to read for the rest of my life, my answer would easily be fantasy. It is an endless source of adventure which is why we will be looking at 6 fantasy books that we can’t live without. Keep reading to find out which books made our list!
There are so many amazing fantasy novels that choosing only six feels wrong. But that just makes this task that much more fun. There will be some obvious picks as well as personal preferences. No list will ever get it right but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying.
These six fantasy books we chose are ones that we loved a lot. If they suddenly disappeared from the world, many people would be heartbroken. And we’d have to gather everyone and embark on a quest to retrieve them.
And yes, a few great ones just missed the list but we should celebrate the ones that did make the list instead of the books that didn’t. With that said, you can see the full list below!
6 Fantasy Books That We Can’t Live Without
- The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
- A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
- The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie
- Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
- The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1 by Patrick Rothfuss
- Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
The Lord of the Rings
Right off the bat, we chose the fantasy novel to rule them all, The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. It is the novel that shaped the fantasy world of fiction that we have all come to love. This is the classic adventure novel and it a series that we revisit often.
A Wizard of Earthsea

Another older fantasy novel on the list is A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. Unlike TLOTR, it doesn’t get enough credit. It is considered to be the novel that laid the blueprint for the Harry Potter series as well as creating the magic system of names and words having powers. And it flipped the script and decided to have a young wizard instead of your typical old wizard.
Mistborn
One of if not the best modern fantasy writer in my opinion has to be Brandon Sanderson. His world building and magic systems are some of the best. And Mistborn highlights all of those qualities. And while many may consider The Stormlight Archives, I would still choose Mistborn over it. But there is no wrong answer her.
The Blade Itself
The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie may be one series on the list that may be able to match the violence of Martin’s novels. Whereas characters in A Game of Thrones are royalty, that isn’t usually the case in The Blade Itself and the accompanying books in the series. It is a dark and gritty novel that doesn’t play into the hero tropes, instead following a bunch of characters that somehow are stuck together as disaster surrounds them.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel
A lesser known fantasy novel that we loved is Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. The novel is about magic returning to England two men, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell leading the helm. But they learn that magic can be dangerous and has consequences. It is different from your typical fantasy novels and slower paced but the payoff is worth it.
Conclusion
These are the 6 fantasy books that we can’t live without. The classic Lord of the Rings series to Mistborn are some of those novels that made our list. What 6 fantasy novels would you include on your list? Let us know in the comments below!
