I am still trying to come to terms that August is behind us and that summer is coming to an end soon. But until that happens, I will enjoy the remaining days as much as I can. For now, I will be looking and choosing the best books I read in August!

There is no real method in how I choose what to read. It all depends on what book has caught my eye or whatever is in my to-read pile at that moment. And like any to-read pile, my list is always growing and changing. And one difference that I have made this year is to read more books released this year.

But other times, I will come across a novel or series that has been popular for a while but has just come across my radar. Or an award winning novel that keeps showing up on various lists. Whenever I am doing research, I am constantly adding books to my list and this has helped me to always have books to read. You can see the full list below!

The Best Books I Read in August

Gingko Season

I chose to read Gingko Season by Naomi Xu Elegant because of the positive reviews as well as the unique title it has. And after reading this novel, I was glad I gave it a chance. This is a novel about love, identity, and coming to terms with many things as you get older.

I loved Elegant’s writing style and thought-provoking lines throughout the book. Penelope is a fantastic protagonist and her journey is one that many people in their 20s can relate with. We all have eccentric and friends with strong personalities.

Annihilation

Southern Reach series
Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

If I had to choose my favorite book that I read in August, then it has to be Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1) by Jeff VanderMeer. Who knew that horror and fantasy would make a fantastic novel? What I loved about this novel was the mystery and how VanderMeer keeps the reader in the dark. The more you learn, the more questions arise.

It took all my willpower to not read the whole series within a week. I read this novel in a day and have been searching for novels just like this. The good news is that it has gotten me back into reading horror novels and just in time as September arrives.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau

Speaking of horror novels, I decided to revisit one of my favorite authors and tackle her catalog of books. That led me to reading The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I thought I would. It started off slow but once the characters are introduced and the plot established, the novel picks up fast.

Orbital

Orbital: A Novel (Booker Prize Winner) Novel by Samantha Harvey
Orbital book review

While I love sci-fi novels, I don’t often find myself thinking about space. Orbital by Samantha Harvey focuses on six astronauts and their 24 hour journey around Earth at the international Space Station. This novel is beautifully written and it feels like a poetry book.

Every sentence is beautiful and you can feel the awe that the characters have for space. There are few novels that are perfect and I think Orbital is one of those books. It is magical and it feels like you are floating in space while reading it.

Conclusion

August was a good month of reading and I am happy with my book selections. I came across four incredible books and will be sharing all of the books I read in August in a future article. How many of these books have you read? Let us know in the comments below!
