Award Winning Historical Fiction Books Worth Reading
- Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
- Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an amazing and gifted writer and an author that everyone should check out. Her 2006 novel Half of a Yellow Sun is a classic novel about the Nigerian Civil War and what many people suffered afterwards.

The novel ended up winning the 2007 Women’s Prize for Fiction and sheds light on events that few people know about around the world. This is one of many novels by Adichie that are beloved worldwide and she released a new book this year called Dream Count that I am excited to read in the near future.
Another author on this list that has multiple classics is Toni Morrison. Her works are touted as some of the most important works of literature and after you read her books, you will agree. The novel we will be focusing on is Song of Solomon.
In fact, Song of Solomon was cited as one of the reasons for awarding Morrison the Nobel Prize in Literature 1993. The novel is a powerful work of fiction that will evoke many feelings and make you sit and think after finishing it. I loved this novel and still think about the ending to this day.
When talking about classics, it is hard not to mention The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. We’ve all had to read it in school and it is the first novel most of us read that is written by Steinbeck. He is considered one of the greatest American writers and novels like The Grapes of Wrath showcase just that.
The novel went on to win the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize and just like Morrison, this novel was cited when Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962.
Steinbeck writes about the great depression and the hardships that many families had to go through because of it. If you haven’t read this novel since high school, now is a great time to revisit and enjoy one of the greatest works of American literature.
Conclusion
These are award winning historical fiction books worth reading. Many of these novels are considered classics and ones that people read in school. Even if you have read them before, they are worth revisiting and rereading. Happy reading!
