The Ministry of Time: Book Review

Today, we will be reviewing The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley, a sci-fi romance spy novel. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novel and if you should add it to your reading list!

The Ministry of Time Summary

An unnamed protagonist has applied for a highly classified job and works on a project where a newly established government ministry is gathering “expats” from the past to learn about time travel and study it. The protagonist is given the job of a “bridge” and has to live with and monitor Commander Graham Gore, also known as “1847.”

Commander Graham Gore was supposed to have died during the 1845 expedition to the arctic but now has to learn how to adjust to the modern world. The protagonist along with other bridges report to the Ministry of Time about the progress of the expats regularly. 

Things take a turn when the protagonist finds out that what the ministry is up to and the forces that want to kill her. It doesn’t help the she has found herself attracted to 1847. What she chooses to do will change the future of not just hers and the expats, but also the future and what tomorrow will look like for everyone. 

Who Doesn’t Like Time Travel?

The Ministry of Time was released in 2024 and Kaliane Bradley thought of the idea of the novel during the 2020 COVID pandemic. While watching The Terror on AMC, she wrote vignettes about Fore in modern England to entertain her friends. Even she didn’t think this would become her debut novel.

I love reading sci-fi novels and books about time travel. Bradley’s plot and her approach to time travel is fun and I enjoyed the novel a lot. I do think there were some obvious plot twists while others did catch me by surprise, forgetting how complicated time travel actually is. 

I love the premise of this novel and I am being greedy when I say I want Bradley to revisit this world in the future, pun intended. She chooses fun characters to bring back to the present and while I will say some of the time travel rules aren’t fully explained, it didn’t hinder the novel. 

Conclusion

I enjoyed every second of this novel and can see why it was considered one of the best books of 2024 by many publications. It has been a while since I read a time travel book and novels like this are way I am always intrigued by them. You should definitely add this novel to your reading list because it is an adventure you don’t want to miss out on. Happy reading!
