With 2025 around the corner, everyone is releasing their end of year lists. And the New York Public Library is no exception. They have released a list of the most read books of 2024 and give us a glimpse of what New Yorkers were reading!
I love end of year lists because not only does it show you what everyone else is reading, but you can find new books to add to your reading list. And even if you don’t want to buy books, you can check them out at your local library.
The New York Public Library covers the five boroughs of New York City and this list is a citywide list combining all of them. In a future article, we will cover the boroughs one by one and see how similar and different they are. You can see the full list below!
The Most Checked Out Books at the New York Public Libraries
- Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
- Happy Place by Emily Henry
- Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
- The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

- Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
- Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano
- Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

The most checked out book was Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, one of the biggest books released in 2022. In second place was Emily Henry’s Happy Place which was released in 2024. And in third place was Fourth Wing, the romantasy novel by Rebecca Yarros that has been dominating charts since its release in 2023.
These are some amazing books and I have read some of them and can’t wait to read others. I expect many books released this year to be on next year’s end of year list as more people discover them.
