Fourth Book in the Empyrean Series Update

The third book in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros, Onyx Storm, has finally released. And now, everyone wants to know when the fourth book in the series will be released!

Fans loved Onyx Storm and are already wondering when the fourth Empyrean book will be coming out. Yarros has already stated that there will be five books in the Empyrean series. The ending of Onyx Storm also points to a book four and that Yarros will be returning to this series.

But when is the question that everyone is asking. According to Yarros, that may be a while. In a comment on Instagram, Yarros has that she hasn’t even started working on the follow up to Onyx Storm. 

That isn’t the news that fans want to hear but the good news is that we can predict when the novel will be released based on prior book releases. 

Fourth Wing took the world by storm in 2023 and the success of the novel led to Iron Flame, the second book in the series to be released only 7 months later. That is really fast and one of the reasons that it happened as fast as it did was because Yarros didn’t stop writing after finishing Fourth Wing and already had a draft for the second novel.

That wasn’t the case for Onyx Storm and fans had to wait a little over a year before it was released. That is still a good timetable and shows how hard Yarros works. She has a chronic illness which took a toll on her. 

“I’ve been really clear that I’m going to rest now. I drove my body to a place that was untenable, and I knew it, and my family knew it, and my husband knew it, and it shouldn’t have happened. I shouldn’t have allowed it to happen,” Yarros said in an interview with Elle.   

Yarros’ health comes first and foremost and fans should respect that. 

With the past releases, the most likely release date for the fourth Empyrean book will be either late 2026 or early 2027. Yarros and her publisher Red Tower Books have been making sure to not let the hype of the books fade away and have been consistent in releasing new books. 

After the first two books, Yarros took her time with Onyx Storm and it took only 15 months to be released. Yarros will take a break and it might be a few months before she resumes her writing. But she knows how the series will go and has an ending in mind.

The earliest we can expect the fourth Empyrean book to be released is in late 2026. Maybe even in the summer of 2026 because it took 14 months for Onyx Storm to be released after Ion Flame. But that is being very optimistic.

It hasn’t even been a week since Onyx Storm was released and it is already the biggest release of the year. Yarros has delivered a great third book and fans should let her enjoy her success and not pressure her. Instead, let her do what she always does and she has always delivered on a timely manner!
