Today, we will be reviewing the fantasy novel Godkiller by Hannah Kaner. Keep reading to find out if you should pick up this new fantasy novel and give it a read!’
This fantasy novel came across my radar while I was browsing new fantasy books. The title made me give it a chance and the blurb drew me in. I always love reading about fantasy novels that incorporate gods and Kaner’s book has a ton of them.
The obvious comment that I imagine most people will say is that this has already been done and you aren’t wrong. A major theme is about old and new gods but the focus is more so on about a kingdom trying to move on from its old gods but many people still cling on and pray to them in secrecy.
In this novel, we have a couple of protagonists. The novel starts off with Kissen and her tragic childhood. In present time, she is a godkiller. But when is young noble girl approaches her with a mysterious god, Kissen decides to help her and that leads her to an adventure that takes her back to the city of gods.
For the most part, that is all you need to know to get into the novel. Kaner does a wonderful job of explaining all of the important details and I was hooked. There are a lot of fun fantasy elements and Kissen is the perfect protagonist.
The plot twists, fight scenes, and world building make this a fantastic fantasy novel. I do think that Kaner does fail in making me care for the world she has built and its future. I think that is partly because her novel focuses on the characters more and most people who aren’t central to the novel are not that unique or worth caring about.
But the adventure and the plot are interesting and are promising and I can’t wait to see what Kaner does in the future. Godkiller is book one in the Fallen Gods trilogy that was released on January 2023. Book two, Sunbringer was released on March 2024 and the third book is set to release on April 2025.
I enjoyed this book a lot and while it won’t go down as one of my favorite fantasy books of all time, I will recommend it to fantasy fans. Writing about gods is not easy and there is a lot that comes with that topic but Kaner does a great job and I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy!
