Historical fiction has become one of my favorite genres over the last few years and I am constantly looking for new historical fiction books to add to my reading list. There is something special about reading a novel that transports you to another time period while also teaching you about real historical events, cultures, and people. The best historical fiction novels manage to balance storytelling and history in a way that feels immersive instead of educational.

And thankfully, 2025 already was packed with incredible historical fiction releases.

I am still trying to catch up on all the amazing books that came out last year and now publishers are already giving us another wave of highly anticipated novels. Honestly, it is a great problem to have. Every year it feels like the genre gets stronger and more diverse with authors exploring lesser known historical moments, overlooked voices, and settings we do not often see in mainstream fiction.

That is one of the reasons I love historical fiction so much. Of course, it is entertaining, but it also introduces readers to parts of history they may never have learned about otherwise. Some novels focus on major historical events while others dive into smaller, more personal stories that still feel just as impactful.

Last year’s lineup included bestselling authors, literary heavyweights, and newer voices that deserved attention. We got stories set everywhere from Paris to Bombay and novels exploring war, identity, family, survival, and power. There are also several books on this list that blend historical fiction with mystery, folklore, and magical realism which always makes the genre even more exciting.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, these are the books from 2025 that you should absolutely need to check out.

Must Read Historical Fiction Novels of 2025

The Life of Herod the Great by Zora Neale Hurston

One of the most fascinating books on this list is easily The Life of Herod the Great by Zora Neale Hurston. Anytime a previously unpublished work from a legendary author gets released, it immediately became one of the most anticipated books of the year.

Hurston is best known for Their Eyes Were Watching God, but this release gives readers a chance to experience another side of her writing. The novel focuses on Herod the Great, one of the most controversial rulers in biblical history, and explores themes of power, politics, and ambition.

Historical fiction readers who enjoy stories centered around ancient history will definitely want to keep this one on their radar. It is not often that we get historical fiction set during this time period, which immediately makes the novel stand out from many of the other releases this year.

There is also something exciting about seeing how Hurston approaches such a complex historical figure. This feels like one of those books that literary fiction fans and historical fiction readers alike will be talking about all year long.

The Lotus Shoes by Jane Yang

The Lotus Shoes by Jane Yang is another historical fiction novel that immediately caught my attention. The title alone makes it memorable and the premise sounds emotionally powerful.

The novel explores themes surrounding womanhood, class, and tradition in historical China. Historical fiction centered around Chinese history continues gaining popularity and for good reason. There are so many rich stories and historical periods that deserve more attention in fiction.

Books like this are exactly why I love the genre. They allow readers to step into worlds that feel completely different while still connecting through universal emotions and struggles.

I also expect this novel to resonate with readers who enjoy character driven historical fiction. Stories focused on personal identity and societal expectations tend to leave a lasting impression when done well.

Harlem Rhapsody by Victoria Christopher Murray

Victoria Christopher Murray has already proven herself as an incredible storyteller and Harlem Rhapsody sounds like another major release for historical fiction fans.

The Harlem Renaissance remains one of the most fascinating cultural movements in American history and yet it still feels underexplored in mainstream fiction compared to other historical periods. That alone makes this novel exciting.

Any novel set during the Harlem Renaissance immediately has the potential for incredible atmosphere, music, art, and larger than life historical figures. It was such an important moment culturally and politically that there are endless stories to tell from that era.

I am especially excited to see how Murray captures the energy and creativity of Harlem during that time. Historical fiction works best when the setting feels alive and this period naturally lends itself to vivid storytelling.

Punished by Ann-Helén Laestadius

One thing I always appreciate in historical fiction is when authors focus on lesser known histories and communities. Punished by Ann-Helén Laestadius seems like exactly that type of novel.

Laestadius has already received praise for her previous work and this novel is expected to explore the experiences of the Sámi people. Stories like this are important because many readers may know very little about this history and culture before picking up the book.

That educational aspect is part of what makes historical fiction so rewarding. You are not just reading for entertainment. You are learning something new while becoming emotionally invested in the characters and their experiences.

Last Twilight in Paris by Pam Jenoff

Last Twilight in Paris by Pam Jenoff

Pam Jenoff has become one of the most recognizable names in historical fiction, especially for readers who enjoy World War II novels. Last Twilight in Paris already sounds like another emotional and gripping story from her.

World War II fiction remains incredibly popular and while there are countless novels set during that era, the best authors still find ways to make those stories feel fresh and meaningful.

Paris is also one of those settings that naturally works beautifully in historical fiction. There is romance, danger, beauty, and tragedy all wrapped into one location.

Jenoff has a talent for writing emotionally engaging stories and I expect this novel to be another big hit with readers who enjoy historical fiction focused on survival, resistance, and human resilience during wartime.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

Stephen Graham Jones is primarily known for horror, which makes this one of the most interesting books on the list.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter appears to blend historical fiction with horror elements and honestly, I love when genres overlap like this. Historical horror has become increasingly popular and there is something uniquely unsettling about mixing real history with supernatural or psychological terror.

Jones is also one of the most exciting writers working today and his ability to create atmosphere is incredible. That alone makes this a must read for me.

This feels like one of the more unique historical fiction releases of 2025 and one I am eager to read!

A Map to Paradise by Susan Meissner

Susan Meissner consistently writes historical fiction that resonates with readers emotionally and A Map to Paradise sounds like another strong addition to her catalog.

One thing Meissner does particularly well is balancing historical context with deeply personal stories. Her novels tend to focus on relationships, secrets, and emotional journeys while still grounding everything in a vivid historical setting.

That combination makes her books extremely accessible even for readers who do not normally pick up historical fiction.

I always appreciate historical fiction that feels intimate rather than overly focused on large historical events. Sometimes the smaller stories end up being the most memorable.

Six Days in Bombay by Alka Joshi

Alka Joshi quickly became a favorite among historical fiction readers thanks to The Henna Artist and Six Days in Bombay, she has made a big splash in the literary world.

Bombay is such a vibrant setting for historical fiction and I am excited to see Joshi return to India for another richly detailed story.

One of the strengths of Joshi’s writing is how immersive it feels. Her books are full of sensory details, layered characters, and emotionally compelling narratives.

Historical fiction readers who enjoy atmospheric novels with strong female characters will definitely want to pick this one up.

The Amalfi Curse by Sarah Penner

The Amalfi Curse by Sarah Penner

Sarah Penner became hugely popular with The Lost Apothecary and The Amalfi Curse already sounds like another atmospheric historical novel.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most visually stunning settings imaginable which immediately gives this book a strong sense of atmosphere. Add mystery, secrets, and historical intrigue into the mix and it becomes even more appealing.

Penner has a way of blending historical fiction with suspense and that combination works extremely well for readers who want something immersive and fast paced.

This feels like the kind of book that readers will fly through in a weekend.

My Name Is Emilia del Valle by Isabel Allende

Any new Isabel Allende release automatically becomes one of the biggest literary events of the year.

Allende is one of the greatest historical fiction writers alive and My Name Is Emilia del Valle will likely become one of the most anticipated novels of the decade.

Her books always feel sweeping, emotional, and beautifully written. She has a gift for blending history, politics, family dynamics, and magical realism into stories that feel timeless.

There are very few authors who can make historical fiction feel as emotionally powerful as Allende does.

This is probably one of the books I am most excited to read!

The Devil Three Times by Rickey Fayne

The Devil Three Times sounds like one of the darkest and most intriguing historical fiction novels of 2025

The title alone grabs your attention immediately and suggests something atmospheric and haunting. Historical fiction combined with folklore or supernatural elements can be incredibly effective when done well.

I always appreciate when historical fiction takes risks stylistically instead of following the same formula. This feels like one of those books that could surprise a lot of readers.

It also sounds like the perfect novel for readers who enjoy literary fiction with darker themes and morally complicated characters.

Conclusion

These were some of the most exciting historical fiction novels released in 2025 and honestly, it was stacked with incredible books.

From literary heavyweights like Isabel Allende to genre bending stories from Stephen Graham Jones, there is a little bit of everything on this list. Whether you enjoy wartime fiction, literary historical novels, gothic mysteries, or character driven stories, 2025 delivered
