The world is filled with many amazing books and unfortunately, we won’t get to read all of them. All you can do is keep reading new books and be happy that you came across the ones that you did. And after reading a lot of good reviews about A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, I was happy that I decided to read this novel, not knowing what to expect going in.

A Man Called Ove Summary

Ove is a cranky old man who has lived a full life with his wife and now plans to end his life in an orderly fashion. But before he can do that, he is interrupted by a young couple and their two daughters that have moved next to Ove. They need his help and an unlikely friendship forms that changes the course of Ove’s life.

Commentary

Trying to write the summary of this novel without spoili ng anything was not easy. That is why I decided to make it short and leave the fun surprises for you to read on your own. The novel is brilliant and I loved every second of this book. It is no wonder that it has sold over 3 million copies since publication.

The idea for the novel came to Backman one day after reading an article about a man named Ove who threw a fit while buying tickets at an art museum. That is similar to how the book opens up in the first few pages. Backman said he instantly related to this man who said he is “not great at talking to people.”

After that. Backman started writing blogposts under the title “I am a Man Called Ove” and that led to Backman seeing potential for a character and a novel. The rest is history as they say.

Ove is a grumpy old man that is not great at talking to people. He likes to get straight to the point and that makes it difficult for people to understand him. But he has a kind hard and that leads him to extending a helping hand to the people around him that have come to be dependent on him.

Backman saw something in this character and fleshed him out, making him feel authentic and someone many people can relate to. That is a big reason why this novel is as popular as it is. Another reason the novel is beloved by millions is that the writing and plot will make you feel a bunch of different emotions.

Conclusion

This is easily one of the best books that I have read this year. Few novels can leave me as moved as this. A Man Called Ove is a must read and a novel I would recommend to everyone that loves a well written novel.
