If you haven’t read a novel by Koontz, then you haven’t been inside a bookstore at an airport. With over a hundred books published, including novellas and short stories, Koontz has been busy. Some of his biggest novels include titles as such The Eyes of Darkness, Odd Thomas, and Watchers. It is no wonder that Koontz has sold over 450 million copies, making him one of the best-selling authors alive. And Koontz is still going strong with the release of The Bad Weather Friend in 2024.

Koontz was a teacher but wanted to pursue his career as a writer. His wife Gerda helped him pursue his dreams by telling him “I’ll support you for five years, and if you can’t make it as a writer in that time, you’ll never make it.” In 1968, Koontz published his first novel Star Quest and wrote many books. In 1973, Koontz got his first bestseller with his novel Demon Seed as the novel went on to sale over 2 million copies in its first year. A film adaptation followed in 1977 starring Julie Christie and Fritz Weaver.
In 1998, Koontz wrote and executively produced Phantoms, starring Peter O’Toole, Rose McGowan, Joanna Going, Liev Schreiber, and Ben Affleck. The film earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Horror Film. In 2019 Koontz signed a deal with Amazon Publishing and has released more than a dozen Amazon Original Stories and several novels.

In 2024, Dean Koontz has a net worth of $200 million, making him one of the wealthiest authors alive. That shouldn’t surprise anyone considering he has written over a 100 books and short stories and has produced movies. On top of that, his books are often adapted into movies or TV shows. And lastly, the deal with Amazon Publishing must have been worth a lot considering how big Koontz is.
