As the years sail by, the quest for the newest children’s books continues as ever. For some, avid readers, it’s a joy. They devour stories and yearn for more.
For others, it’s a desperate search. Reading is a battle. And it’s the hope of the surrounding grown-ups to dig up the one exception that will help children find their love for reading.

Below is a sample of just some of the books to cross my path in 2024. Some are hot off the press. Others have been around a couple of years, only to sneak into the spotlight now. And some are waiting for release. So you’ll have to keep an eye on them for when they grace the bookshelves.

Sometimes the best children’s books are packed with pictures. And these titles below are no exception, from astronaut adventures to heart-warming searches to find a lost friend.

Jakes First Day by Twinkl Originals
A lot of people struggle with their first day at school. This is a lovely tale to reassure children that school doesn’t have to be a scary place.
Daisy and the Trouble with Space by Kes Gray
If your kids like science, they’ll love this story. When Daisy gets excited about space after learning all about the moon and stars at school, she ventures home and decides to turn her whole bedroom into an entire universe!

The Secret Language of Birds by Lynne Kelly
An enchanting and profound wildlife drama. When Nina finds the nest of two mysterious birds at summer camp, there’s a mix of excitement and wonder. And no one can quite identify them. Who are they and where did they come from?
The Girl Who Wasn’t There by Jacqueline Wilson, Rachael Dean
When two sisters move to a tower, they find a forbidden room at the top. What’s in there? Who knows. But it’s all they can think about, especially when strange things start happening in their new home.
Stitch by Padraig Kenny
Ever heard of Frankenstein? Well, this is another version for young readers. Dripping with gothic atmosphere, this tale follows two characters, brought to life by their creator and facing dire odds as their newfound life begins to fall to pieces.

You’ll find a healthy dose of fantasy fiction and intrigue, as well as a sprinkling of adventure and tales of friendship and even romance among these pages.
Blood Flowers by Jay McGuiness

Not for the Faint of Heart by Lex Croucher

Children’s Books (15+)
These books are also aimed at teenagers and young adults. But the content is more mature and the themes are more complex. Expect powerful tales of love
The latest creation from the author of Heartstopper, this book is ideal for older readers who have enjoyed books by John Green. The story is about Victoria Springs as she makes her way through A-Levels and the challenges of being a teenager.
This novel comes with trigger warnings. So please read them before buying this book.
A tale of twins separated at birth, the book is told in verse and follows the stories of both children as they navigate their way through the ups and downs of life. But even as they live separate lives, they never forget about their sibling through it all.
