Stephen Curry Discusses His Latest Children’s Book ‘I Am Extraordinary’

Superstar NBA player Stephen Curry is one of the most accomplished basketball players of all time. But even when Curry isn’t on the court, he is still scoring.

His children’s book I am Extraordinary is a story about a girl named Zoe who is self-conscious about her hearing aids. But she overcomes her thoughts and fears with the help of her friends and motivated to join the school’s soccer team.

The book features an appearance from Curry himself as he addresses Zoe. “Wow Zoey!,” says Curry in the book. “What an inspirational story. There will always be obstacles in life. But those obstacles aren’t there to stop you. They’re to challenge you. It’s up to you to find the courage and strength to overcome them. So, what makes you extraordinary?” 

This is Curry’s second children’s novel and this is what he had to say about the book.

“Coming off of the first book, ‘I Have a Superpower,’ we are always obviously trying to create amazing storytelling for kids that can inspire confidence and embracing how unique they are,” Curry says.

The latest book is focused on kid’s overcoming doubt and being counted out. And just like the characters of his book, Curry also knows how it feels to be underrated.

“Coming up through basketball and I didn’t pass the eye test. I was called like a late bloomer, but it was about developing a confidence in who I was, developing a work ethic and not getting deterred by failure along the way,” he said.

Now, Curry is considered one of the best basketball players of all time and the best three-point shooter in the history of the National Basketball Association. Curry turned 36 recently and is still in the prime of his basketball career.

Curry launched the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation in 2019 with his wife Ayesha Curry in Oakland in 2019 to help the community.  “We focus on three vital pillars of a healthy childhood: nutrition, literacy, and physical activity. Our investments meet kids where they are most often —in school, at home, and in their community,” it says on the website.

“Life has an interesting way of revealing where you need to be,” Curry said. “This is something that with the right investment, with the right approach of getting kids the appropriate culture relevant, age appropriate books, tutoring, which is another element of what we’re doing.”

Curry wants to keep using his stardom to help people around him. And maybe even become a politician after he is done playing basketball.

“I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in a way that I can, so if that’s the way to do it, I’m not saying the presidency, but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change, or if there is another way outside of politics that we can do.”
