Like many people, I was first introduced to the classics in school. Some of them I was not the biggest fan of. But others like The Outsiders and To Kill a Mockingbird are novels that I often find myself revisiting.

There is a reason why these novels are classics. Decades and even centuries later, they still resonate with readers strongly. You will see many familiar names and may finally be encouraged to read these amazing classics. You can see the full list below.

The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

One of my favorite classics of all time has to be The Count of Monte Cristo. It is an adventure novel unlike anything else. The book is entertaining and has held up well centuries later. If you want people to read more classics, then this is the one I would recommend them to start with.

Edmond Dantès is a young sailor who has been falsely for a crime he didn’t commit. He loses his job and his wife and after years of captivity, he escapes and discovers a hidden fortune. Edmond returns as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and plans to use his newfound wealth to take revenge on all those who wronged him years ago.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

A short read that I recommend to everyone is The Picture of Dorian Gray. It is about a vain character who sells his soul to stay forever young. First published in 1890, the novel was controversial but has gone on to be recognized as a classic. I loved this novel and I can see why it has stayed relevent for over a century.

Dorian Gray is a handsome young man who becomes obsessed with his own beauty and youth. That wish comes true but at a cost. As Dorian lives his life of indulgence and moral corruption, his portrait reflects the consequences of his action.

Dracula

Many people know of Dracula but few have read the original source material. The novel is a fun read and when it was published in 1897, it terrified many people. You will be amazed to find out some of Dracula’s abilities and how many of his powers have changed over the years. This is a novel I recommend eberyone who loves vampires to read.

Count Dracula is a vampire who travels from Transylvania to England in search of new victims. The story is told through letters, diary entries, and newspaper clippings. A group of individuals gather together to stop Dracula from terrorizing London before it is too late.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

When talking about some of the most popular classic novels, you have to mention Pride and Prejudice. As someone who doesn’t read much romance novels, I gave this one a chance because of how beloved it is and I am glad because it surpassed all my expectations. The storytelling and writing make this a fantastic novel that feels like it could have been written a couple of decades ago.

Set in early 19th-century England, we follow Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates issues of class, marriage, and societal expectations. Her initial dislike of the wealthy and reserved Mr. Darcy gradually transforms as she learns more about his true character. Austen’s sharp wit and keen observations make this a timeless story about love, growth, and overcoming first impressions.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a big fan of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by Tolkien. These novels helped shape the genre to what it is today and even to this day, this series is as relevant as ever. As fantasy novels have become more complicated since this series was first published, the authors of those books wouldn’t be writing if it wasn’t for Tolkien.

This epic fantasy trilogy follows Frodo Baggins and his companions as they embark on a perilous journey to destroy a powerful ring that could bring darkness to Middle-earth. Along the way, they face dangerous enemies, form lasting friendships, and test their courage. Tolkien’s richly detailed world and themes of heroism, sacrifice, and good versus evil have made this one of the greatest fantasy stories of all time.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Like most people, I first read Of Mice and Men in school and the ending stayed with me for a long time. The novel showcases why John Steinbeck is considered one of the best American authors. There is a reason why this novel is raught in school but I recommend revisiting it on your own.

This novella tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant workers during the Great Depression who dream of owning land and building a better life. Despite Lennie’s childlike innocence and strength, his actions often lead to trouble. Steinbeck explores themes of friendship, loneliness, and the harsh realities of life through this emotional and tragic tale.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

When talking about classic John Steinbeck novels, you have to mention The Grapes of Wrath. He was a man of the people and this story captures the American struggle during the Great Depression. What Steinbeck achieves with this novel is what many authors dream of doing.

Set during the Great Depression, this novel follows the Joad family as they are forced to leave their Oklahoma home and travel to California in search of work and a better future. Along the way, they face poverty, injustice, and hardship. Steinbeck’s powerful storytelling highlights themes of resilience, family, and the struggles of the working class.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

The first novel that I remember actually reading on my own time was The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. As a middle school student, this novel resonated with me and what impressed me was it captures what it means to be a teenager. A big reason for that might be that Hinton wrote this novel when she herself was a teenager.

This coming-of-age novel follows Ponyboy Curtis, a member of the Greasers, as he navigates life in a divided society where conflict between social classes often turns violent. Through his experiences, Ponyboy begins to question the labels placed on people and what truly defines them. The Outsiders is a timeless story about identity, belonging, and empathy.
