The 1800s was a great time for novels and has gave us some amazing classics. That is why we decided to look back and list the best books of the 1800s that you should read. Keep reading to find out which novels made our list!
You may have heard some of these novels but never got around to reading most of them. They are over a century old and many of these authors are forgotten by many. And yet, many of these novels are being adapted into movies.
To still be popular today is an accomplishment because novels come and go just like that. But for many of these novels, they will always be around because they are just that good. Jane Austen is as popular as ever and who doesn’t love Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novels?
This list highlights some of our favorite books of the 1800s that we can’t live without. You can see the full list below!

A Study in Scarlet
When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes, people in London mourned his death. They were angry at Doyle for killing such a beloved character which is why Doyle was forced to bring him back. While Doyle wrote other novels, fans only wanted Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet is the novel that gave birth to Sherlock Holmes and created the legend of the greatest detective ever.
Frankenstein
If you like horror novels, then you will love Frankenstein. It is a classic that has aged well over the past two centuries. Read the novel that many consider the first sci-fi novel and a novel that asks philosophical questions that are still relevant to this day.
The Count of Monte Cristo
One of my favorite classics of all time has to be The Count of Monte Cristo. It is an adventure novel unlike anything else. The book is entertaining and has held up well centuries later. Who doesn’t love a good revenge story?

Little Women is by Louisa May Alcott!
Ha came here to say that too!
Did you know that in one of David Icke’s books he accuses Mary Shelley and her husband of being reptiles? I once read a book on the history of electricity that mentioned her and how she might have gotten the idea for writing this great story. Also, I love the quote “Knowledge is knowing that Frankenstein was not the monster, wisdom is knowing that he was.”
Add to this Loisa May Alcott’s Little Men, which gives insights into males and in education in general.
