NBA’s next superstar Victor Wembanyama is always seen reading books when traveling. The 19-year-old is often seen reading by teammates when traveling.
“He has books this big,” said his teammate Julian Champagnie, holding his thumb and forefinger inches apart.
Earlier this year, Wembanyama was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the number one overall pick. The hype surrounding him was palpable for the 7’3” French born player.

What many people didn’t know was that he is also a book lover.. “I think I read even more than before, with all the traveling,” he said. But he hasn’t been keeping track of how many books he has read “I actually wondered how many books I have read,” he said.
Wembanyama began reading early on and hasn’t stopped since.
“I’m saying before elementary school, this is when I started reading books basically,” he said. “I read a lot during my whole elementary school, but I read less and less in middle school, and then I started again in high school.
His favorite genre is fantasy and is a fan of Brandon Sanderson, author of the Mistborn series.
And if you were wondering if Wembanyama prefers print books or eBooks, you will find that he is an old soul.
“It hurts my eyes a little bit when I spend too much time on the screen,” he said.
An innocent interview about books may have inadvertently led to some shade by one of his teammates.
“He is getting through ’em,” Tre Jones said. “It’s not like he is just stuck on page one. He is not doing it for the pictures. He is reading.”
While it may seem like an innocent comment at first, many people speculate that Jones may have been referencing NBA superstar LeBron James. In recent years, there has been a meme going around saying that LeBron only reads the first few pages of a book.
We may never really know what Jones may have meant. Let’s hope it doesn’t get blown out of proportion.
