Today, we will be reviewing King of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. The fantasy novel tells the story of a band of mercenaries called Saga that Gabriel and Clay try to get back together to save Gabriel’s daughter from a hoard of monsters. Keep reading to find out if this novel should be your next read!
King of the Wyld Summary
Clay Cooper, also known as Slowhands for always getting hit first in every fight, is living with his wife Ginny and young daughter Tully in a quiet town. One day, he old friend and former band mate Gabriel visits him, asking his help to get the band Saga together and rescue his daughter who is trapped in Castia, surrounded by a hoard of monsters.
Initially, Clay declines to help Gabriel, thinking about his own family. But he changes his mind and seeks out Gabriel and they head out and try to get back the merceranies back together and reunite the greatest band in the world.

But it is much easier said than down. One of the former members is a king now, another a wizard trying to cure a disease that has killed thousands, and another that hates them for what they did. But Gabe and Clay have no other choice if they want a chance to save his daughter. Can they reunite the old band and once again achieve the impossible?
Commentary
I came across this novel on a Reddit post while researching fantasy novels. And I am glad that I gave it a read. The novel is a fun rescue mission willed with memorable characters. You know a novel is good when it has you laughing out loud.
The narrator is Clay Cooper and it is a brilliant choice. Every other member of Saga is wild and crazy and while that also applies to Clay, he is mostly under control. He is clever and smart but isn’t quick enough to come with a snappy comeback. But as the reader, you get to see his wit and it makes the novel that much more enjoyable.
I will say, I think that including every type of monster in the novel was not the best call. The members of Saga are all quirky and fun. Moog, the wizard, is easily my favorite character. But besides these characters, nobody else is memorable. Even the swords had better lore than 99 percent of the monsters.
Conclusion
If you like fantasy novels and a fun adventure novel, then this is for you. King of the Wyld is part of a trilogy and I will be reading all of them, eager to see where the author takes these novels to. Happy reading!
