The Best Five Fantasy Books to Read

We have curated a list of of the best five fantasy books to read. This list is for the casual reader and not an avid reader that has most likely already read most of these books.

Five Best Fantasy Books to Read

There are a lot of great fantasy series but what five should a casual reader read? We have got the answers for you and you may have even read some of them!

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit

The first series on this list is The Lord of the Ring Series by J. R. R. Tolkien. You cannot start a list about the best fantasy series and not mention this one. On top of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you should also read The Hobbit as it ties in together.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter Book Order
Harry Potter Book Guide by J. K. Rowling.

The second series has to be the boy who lived. Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling is a beautifully written 7 book series that starts off aimed towards kids and grew along with them over the years. Even if you have seen the movies, the books are still worth reading!

His Dark Materials

The first two series seem like obvious choices but we think the third one is also an obvious choice with His Dark Materials by Phillip K. Pullman. It is great storytelling added to a lot of twists and turns and one we definitely recommend.

Mistborn

With the three obvious choices out of the way, the fourth book is Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. It is a fantastic fantasy novel that follows a group that tries to overthrow an oppressive government run by an immortal being.

The Night Angel

The Night Angel fantasy book series

Lastly, the fifth and final fantasy novel on the list is The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. It is the story of a poor guild boy that is bullied to becoming an assassin that come with their own rules as a wetboy.

Lol there would be hundreds of entries before twilight would be considered. It is not as good as it’s fans thinks. And yes, I did read them.

Don’t get me wrong I love Lotr but I wound not recommend it for casual reader because the writing style I kinda hard to get into. I agree with HP HDM and Mistborn but honestly taught night angel was a bit bland.

I agree about LOTR being too heavy to be considered casual.

It’s Brent Weeks, not Brent Woods. Great series though.

Thanks, I shall fix it soon. Too many authors makes them all feel like made up names after a while…

Clearly you haven’t read any of Sir Terry Pratchett’s work.

“it’s really good so it made the list” is the laziest attempt at getting someone to read something I have seen in a long time.

“The mistborn series isn’t that well known” it has sold literally millions of copies. Brandon Sanderson has sold 20 million books. Last year he raised $15.5 million in less than 24 hours when he decided to crowdsource funding for his next book rather than use a traditional publisher– he ultmately raised over 40 million. Hes one of the most fanous fantasy authors in the world. “Not well known”? That’s like saying, “compared to the Beatles, hardly anyone has heard of the Rolling Stones”–just laughably false.

What about Steven Erikson and the Malazan tale of the Falllen series. My personal favourite fantasy series.
