Shutter Island: Book Review

When you read an amazing book for the first time, you always end up wondering how did the author think of this story? That is exactly what crossed my mind when reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. Find out why you should read this novel that was adapted to a classic movie!

Shutter Island Summary

In 1954, U.S. Marshall Edward “Teddy” Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, who he meets on the ferry boat, head towards Shutter Island. They are visiting to investigate the disappearance of an inmate named Rachel Solando. She is being held at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane for drowning her three children.

Teddy and Aule have to figure out how Solando disappeared from her cell and where she is hiding on the island. Throughout their investigation, we find out that the island is harboring dark secrets. There have been rumors of human experiments and scientific advancements that are ahead of their times.

Bad weather and conspiracy theories make Teddy question everything. Who is Rachel Solando and why is everyone hiding something from him? Can Teddy escape off the island before its too late?

Commentary

Like most people, I heard about the movie first and the book afterwards. Who wouldn’t hear about a great Martin Scorsese movie in which Leonardo DiCaprio stars in? The script, acting, and setting are great and make the movie a modern classic which I definitely recommend everyone to watch.

Dennis Lehane is the first author mentioned on this blog for three different novels not including trilogies. His stories are unique and always intriguing and that is why I will always give his novels a chance. They are consistently good and you know you are in for a great ride. Plus, they also make great Hollywood movies!

Conclusion

The thriller novel is a great read and will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you love a good mystery and surprises, then you should definitely check out Shutter Island. Lehane has shown that he can write a good book and with so many plot twists, it is almost impossible to correctly guess the bad guys!
