One of my favorite people to turn to for book recommendations is billionaire Bill Gates. Anyone who makes it a routine to read at least one hour a day is my type of person. And while many famous people enjoy reading books, few of them enjoy sharing their favorite books as consistently as Bill Gates.
That is why we will be looking at Bill Gates favorite books that he has read recently that you can read this summer. If you aren’t following his blog, then you are missing out on some great book recommendations. He is often sharing what he has read and enjoyed.
Bill Gates’ Summer Book Recommendations
- The Women by Kristin Hannah
- Infectious Generosity by Chris Anderson
- Brave New Words by Sal Khan
- How to Know a Person by David Brooks
The books that he shared this time around seem to have a theme, even if it was unintentional according to his latest post.
“But when I put together a list of recommendations, it’s fun to look back and see if there’s a thread that runs through them,” writes Gates. “This time, there definitely is.”
“The books and TV series on my summer list all touch on the idea of service to others—why we do it, the things that can make it difficult, and why we should do it anyway. One is a novel about the sacrifices made by American nurses on the front lines of the Vietnam War. Another is a call for (and a guide to) being more generous in the digital age. Others include a rumination on connecting with other people and a look at the evolution of how schoolteachers support their students. Even the TV series is a fictional show about government agents protecting their country.”
The Women

The first book on the list might be the most popular book of the year that is still topping bestselling lists. The Women by Kristin Hannah has been the must read book of the first half of 2024 and I am all for it.
‘This terrific novel tells the story of a U.S. Army nurse who serves two tours on the frontlines in Vietnam before returning home to a country rocked by protest and anti-war sentiment,” writes Gates. “The author, Kristin Hannah, has written a number of books that did quite well—including this one—and I can see why. It’s a beautifully written tribute to a group of veterans who deserve more appreciation for the incredible sacrifices they made.
Brave New Words
The other novel that stands on this list to me is Brave New Words by Sal Khan. The book talks about the future of A.I. and Sal is an expert in this field. It will surprise nobody that Gates enjoys this novel about the possibilities of AI in the future.
“Sal—the founder of Khan Academy—has been a pioneer in the field of education technology since long before the rise of artificial intelligence. So the vision he lays out in Brave New Words for how AI will improve education is well grounded. Sal argues that AI will radically improve both outcomes for students and the experiences of teachers, and help make sure everyone has access to a world-class education. He’s well aware that innovation has had only a marginal impact in the classroom so far but makes a compelling case that AI will be different. No one has sharper insights into the future of education than Sal does, and I can’t recommend Brave New Words enough.”
Conclusion
These are the four books that Gates shared on his blog and all make for a great read. The show that Gates enjoyed and talks about on his blog post is called Slow Horses if you were curious about that. Seeing The Women on this list was awesome and it goes to show you that Gates knows the book trends currently taking place.
