Bestselling author and the king of horror Stephen King recently found out that 23 of his books were banned in Florida. And he was not happy about it at all.
School libraries in Florida will not be carrying 23 of King’s novels and it makes you wonder if this is personal. In 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis passed a law that banned books in schools that included any kind of sexual material. Many critics have called out this bill for targeting the LGBTQ+ community and issues about race.
The fight is still ongoing as six major book publishers have sued the state of Florida. The lawsuit was filed by Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers and Sourcebooks, arguing that the law violates the first Amendment.
King was mentioned in the lawsuit and took to Twitter (now called X) to share his feelings about his books being banned.
“Florida has banned 23 pf [sic] my books. What the f***?” (tweet)
King is one of many authors seeing his books being pulled from school libraries in Florida. He joins elite company such as Earnest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Margaret Atwood, and Judy Blume to name a few.
Florida is just one of many states banning books and has set an example of how to go about it. Small groups of people have been pushing for book banning in many states and their strategy is working. I do hope the lawsuit by the six publishing companies holds Florida accountable and removes this horrible law.
