For any avid reader, it’s a given to have a few book quotes memorised. It comes with the territory. And the more you love the book, the more likely you’ll have a line or two locked away.
The same goes for childhood stories, from Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo, to Veronica Roth’s Divergent series, we look back on passages that left their mark.
Many quotes from children’s books have become timeless and are cherished across generations.
But this time, with quotes, we’re going to take a different approach. It’s with that in mind that we’ve posed another question to ChatGPT.

Which Quotes, According To AI, Are The Most Popular?
Using a series of prompts, I asked ChatGPT which book quotes are the most popular. How it calculates this is a mystery. But I asked it to make a list of 10 book quotes. This is what I got:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.”
Robert Munsch, Love You Forever
“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So… get on your way!”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”
A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Dr. Seuss, I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!
“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Refining The List Of Book Quotes
I decided to repeat this process until I had a list of 10 unique authors, with no duplicates which might have occurred to the popularity of one author over another.
I kept working on a prompt until it gave me a refined list of book quotes. You can see those results below:
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
“Even the smallest one can change the world.”
Beatrix Potter, The Tale of Peter Rabbit
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
“You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing.”
E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web
“Real isn’t how you are made. It’s a thing that happens to you.”
Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit
“The greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.”
Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
So that we’ve had a look at these lists, let’s break them down into two categories. The fact some authors appeared more than once, and ChatGPT’s preference for older stories.
Authors With Multiple Appearances
It might not surprise readers that Dr. Seuss emerged at the top of the pile. And get several mentions on top of that as well. In fact, of the 30 book titles that were generated in all, there were 4 appearances by this author for quotes from other books, like Horton Hears A Who and The Lorax.
The same can be said for A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and Roald Dahl as well. They had a further 2-3 book quotes appear in the extended list.
Traditional Vs Modern
ChatGPT also seemed to favour older tales, with the most modern book by J.K Rowling featuring in the final list.
What this may indicate isn’t clear. But my theory is that older books have an advantage due to their historic popularity and an audience of adult and child readers. That’s why it’s only in the case of Harry Potter, with its worldwide success, that it managed to claim a top spot among these other classics.
More Reading
What does this tell us? In the eyes of AI, these samples of book quotes may not be based on whether they inspire or resonate with their young readers.
It may be that it’s a result of acclaim, success, their widespread use in other essays, texts and work elsewhere. Another factor to consider are the associations AI may have with childrens books. In its final comments, it mentioned the book’s uses of themes around friendship, courage, and the impact people can have on the world.
