Captain America will officially pass the helm to the next superhero in Captain America: Brave New World. The trailer for the latest Marvel movie builds up hype as Anthony Mackie will play Captain America. The trailer doesn’t shy away from this transition but will it be enough to get Marvel back on its feet?
We all have seen superhero movies losing their grasp on the public. I do think COVID helped fasten the demise of superhero movies but it was going to happen eventually. The market was too saturated and the plots were almost never good in these movies. While I personally blame the Venom movies for being the reason people were finally fed up with superhero movies, I do think Marvel started releasing way too many TV Shows and movies in recent years.
I think we all knew it was a problem when we had to watch a TV show before watching Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I didn’t watch the show and that led to me having no idea what the beginning of the movie was referencing. Suddenly, watching movies felt like school and you had to do your homework before attending class. The whole point of a movie is that it is a standalone hour and a half experience and crossing that line meant changing the way we experienced movies.
I am glad that this trend didn’t catch on because it was obvious that it was stupid. But the problem with Marvel movies is that they are all connected. Before it was that there was a small connection that could be explained with a line or two but now, if you miss one movie, then you won’t have any idea what is going on.
From this trailer, the movie does look like will do well as a standalone. But they mention Steve Rodgers, the past Captain America, by name and even compare the new version to the old one. That is just reminding us of the past and the good ole days instead of trying to move forward.
The timing of this trailer feels like it is poorly timed and I am surprised that it wasn’t pushed back. With the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump this past weekend, releasing a trailer where politics and voilence is prominent was not a smart idea. A movie that was delayed because of an assassination was Dr. Strangelove by Standley Kubrick after President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
The mistake here was combining politics and superhero movies because people watch movies to escape reality. And with how the fierce the political climate is right now, this should have been something Marvel should have avoided.
Ignoring all of that, I don’t really known how I feel about this movie. I think like everyone else, I am burned out on superhero movies. To Marvel’s credit, this doesn’t feel like a superhero movie, more like an action movie from the trailer and I do give them points for that. Will it be enough to dominate the box office? Probably not.
The success or failure of this movie will determine if we get another Captain America movie or not. And while I won’t be watching this film, I will be looking at the box office sales and see if this movie can succeed where past Marvel movies have failed.
