With almost 4 months into 2024, I have already read some amazing books. That is why I decided to make a list of my five favorite books of 2024 so far. Keep reading to find out which books made my list!
With a total of 23 books read so far, I am reading a lot more consistently than usual. That is always the goal but sometimes, there is nothing good to read. But that hasn’t been the case as I have been reading a lot of great books. You can see the full list below!
- The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth’s Past, #1) by Liu Cixin
- Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
- Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann
- Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke
- Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1) by Rebecca Yarros
The Three-Body Problem
The first book on my list is The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. I came across this book because of the Netlfix show of the same name. And after watching the show, I knew I had to read the books, especially after finding out that the book was very different from the show.
And oh boy, the book makes the adaptation look horrible. The novel is a fresh read and is a sci-fi novel about contact with another lifeform. But the show decides to make the show part drama and that takes away what makes the novel special.
Flowers for Algernon
Another sci-fi novel that I read and loved was Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. What happens when a person with a low IQ becomes a genius? Keyes does a wonderful job, using journal entries as the format and it works brilliantly. We see Charlie’s state of mind and can see his intelligence increase through his entries.
The theme for this list is sci-fi novels and while that wasn’t intentional, I don’t have any regrets about it. This genre might be one that I haven’t read as much as I would have liked and have been visiting classics and I have been enjoying it a lot.
Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann
With that said, the next book I chose is Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. Like The Three-Body Problem, I saw the movie before I sat down and read the book. Grann tells the forgotten history of then Osage murders in Oklahoma which led to the founding of the FBI.
As a history buff, I am always amazed how much stuff we aren’t taught in school or is common knowledge. We all know certain events like the sinking of the Titanic or The Great Depression but less about the murders of minorities or indigenous people. Events like these you have to come across in a show or a book to know about.
Grann does an amazing job researching the murders of the Osage tribe members that took place almost a century ago from when he published the book. And while he covered the murders that got national attention at the time, Grann also researched murders that we never solved and the movie didn’t dive into. Attention to detail and the dedication by Grann makes this a must read.
Childhood’s End
It should come as little surprise that there is yet another sci-fi novel on my list. Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke might be the most popular out of the three books I read and it lived up to the hype. Clarke is amazing sci-fi writer and this novel was impossible to put down.
Just like The Three-Body Problem, humans have made contact with aliens. But this time, the aliens are the ones that found Earth and are the new leaders of the planet. Humanity tries to understand their new leaders as they try to learn more about these aliens and their superior technology.
Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1) by Rebecca Yarros
Lastly, I ended up reading the popular romantasy novels by Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. I will solely focus on Fourth Wing though because it was a novel I could not put down and I can’t say the same about the second book in the series.
As a fan of fantasy novels, I was curious to see what the hype was about surrounding the new romantasy novels that are shattering records. And after reading Fourth Wing, I can see why. Yarros creates a fantasy world that is cruel yet beautiful. The bonds between dragons and humans are unique and fun, creating memorable characters that are just as important as the humans in the novel.
Conclusion
These are the five best books I read in 2024 so far. And yes, I might have made this list way too early since we aren’t even 4 full months in. But I had to share these novels before I forget them as keep reading, finding new gems.
How many of these books have you read or plan to read? Do you have any book recommendations? Feel free to share below!
