It felt like 2024 was a slow start for movies but that seems to be finally changing. Dune: Part Two became the highest opening movie of 2024 with an estimated $81.5 million at the box office.

In the international box office, Dune 2 is expected to make $97 million with a total haul of$ 178.5 million. The movie benefitted from IMAX ticket sales which made up about 23 percent of the domestic sales or about $18.5 million

“Like an oasis in the desert, ‘Dune: Part Two’ is a sight for sore eyes across theatrical exhibition and all of Hollywood,” said Shawn Robbins, who is a chief analyst at BoxOffice.com.

The movie was very popular in IMAX that theaters opened up view times at 3 A.M. And even then, they were selling tickets out fast.

“The only reason it wasn’t higher is we ran out of seats,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.

“The lesson is that if you take a beautiful visual experience, a good story and you put it in the hands of a brilliant filmmaker with an IMAX camera, you’re going to get very good results,” Gelfond added.

Almost all of the movie was filmed using IMAX digital cameras. And yes, this will undoubtably lead to other studios trying to copy this formula.

Studio executives, box office analysts, and theater owners expect Dune to thrive in the coming weeks. It is already being compared to “Oppenheimer” and “Avatar: The Way Of Water.” And while Dune may not be the biggest movie of the year, it may be one of the most important as it elevates the box office.

Third Dune Movie is On the Way

The success of Dune: Part Two means that there will surely be a third Dune movie as a result.

“We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision,” said Grode

“I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not.”
