According to a survey of 2000 U.S. adults who read often, the most popular genre of 2023 is fantasy. Almost half of the people surveyed (49%) chose fantasy. The second most popular was romance with 42%. In third place was history at 39% and sci-fi came in fourth with 36%. The survey was done by OnePoll on behalf of ThriftBooks.

The Most Popular Genres of 2023!

  • Fantasy – 49%
  • Romance – 42%
  • History – 39%
  • Sci-Fi – 36%
  • Comedy – 33%
  • Action-adventure – 2%
  • Mystery – 17%

Other stuff that they survey discovered was that it took the average person surveyed to lose themselves in a book a little over 36 minutes. Readers gravitated the most to World War II novels. The second most popular time period was the present (1970s to today) and lastly the Great Depression. I don’t know if I agree with the present being defined from the 1970’s to today.

Reading in the Bathroom?!

The most popular reading location was at home with 40% percent. A fun tidbit that stands out is that 54% of Gen Zers read in the bathroom along with 20 percent of men. To each their own!

“Books, like movies, often leave us feeling a certain way hours, days and even weeks later,” said a spokesperson for ThriftBooks. “Regardless of what else is going on in our lives, it’s a journey we’re willing to take.”

Conclusion

As a fan of fantasy novels, I fully agree with this list. A good fantasy book is the best way to get immersed in a book. What did you think of the most popular genres of 2023? Let us know in the comments below!
