HBO released the prequel House of the Dragon and it takes place 200 years before Game of Thrones. You may be wondering what the storyline of the show is and what is the source material used for the show. Keep reading to find out!

What is House of the Dragon?

Simply put, House of the Dragon is a spinoff series of Game of Thrones. It focuses on events that took 200 years before Game of Thrones and focuses on the Targaryen family. In Game of Thornes, most of the Targaryens were dead as well as all of their dragons. This show tells how that came to be and how the Targaryen line lost the throne.

House of the Dragon Storyline

The source material for House of the Dragon is George R.R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood. Martin is co-executive of the show and has played a major part in making it come to life. But even then, the show does change a few things from the book as well as build upon other things.

That is because Martin’s novel is supposed to read like a history book. He is unable to go into detail about every event whereas the show is telling it from a first-person narrative. So, while the show is based off of Fire and Blood, it is also adding to the story that Martin wrote.

Dragons

If you have watched Game of Thrones, then you will enjoy this show because it has the same overall feeling. The major difference is that in this show, you get dragons from the beginning. The shots of the dragons flying over King’s Landing is mesmerizing and breathtaking. If that was your favorite part about Game of Thrones, then this show will easily be your new favorite.

The Cast

In the novel, Martin doesn’t go into detail about the characters and that is something the show makes up for. The amazing cast makes every scene come to life and makes it feel like a fresh new story even if you have read Fire and Blood. That is the advantage of having visuals over words on a page when done right.  The book created them but the show is the one that goes more in depth which is usually the other way around.

Conclusion

Now you know where the House of the Dragon storyline comes from. The showrunners have been able to build the characters and add some twists that diverge from the book. Martin is a co-executive and has a say on the direction of the show. It has mostly stayed true to the book while still making it feel fresh for anyone who has read the book!
