A novel that is seen on many lists is Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. You may overlook it but it is a classic novel that is going to keep you reading. The plot centers around pre-colonial life in parts of Nigeria as Europeans invade and change the lives of the people during the latem19th century.
Lastly, a fantasy novel that many of us come across in our childhood is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. If you never got around to reading it, then now is a great time to read it. The themes of the novel will make more sense as an adult and you can appreciate the great storytelling ability of Lewis.
