Ten Historical Award Winning Books To Check Out
Homegoing

Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing was an instant success story that made Gyasi a fan favorite. It went on to win the Pen/Hemingway Award and the American Book Award in 2017. The novel follows the story of Maame, an Asante woman, and her descendants as well as their journey from Ghana to America.
Hamnet
Some historical fictional novels create a world that never happened and change history as it happened. Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell tells the story of Hamnet, the son of Shakespeare who died in childhood. The novel was inescapable when it came out and went on to win the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2020.
Things Fall Apart

A novel that should have gotten more award than it received is Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. It is a brilliant novel about modern Africa and shows how colonialism and Christian missionaries flipped the country upside down. It won the Margaret Wong Memorial Prize in 1959 but is now considered one of the 100 best books of all time.
